Scarlett Johansson: Stars Deserve Their Privacy Too

Scarlett Johansson: Stars Deserve Their Privacy Too

Scarlett Johansson knows she's a Hollywood celebrity, but that doesn't mean she thinks that should forfeit her right to privacy.

The 26-year-old Iron Man 2 actress tells CNN that the nude pictures of her that a hacker leaked online Sept. 15 are really none of anyone's business.

"Just because you're an actor or make films or whatever doesn't mean you're not entitled to your own personal privacy," she says in the interview, according to Reuters. "If that is sieged in some way, it feels unjust. It feels wrong."

After the racy photos of her were leaked, Johansson reportedly enlisted help from the FBI to investigate the invasion of privacy. The ongoing case involves more than 50 alleged incidences of hacked celebrity email accounts and phone numbers. Law enforcement officials have yet to reveal any possible perpetrators.

Even though she's been acting professionally since she was in grade school, Johansson says that life in the spotlight still takes some getting used to on a daily basis.

"It's an adjustment, but I think there are certain instances where you give a lot of yourself and finally you have to kind of put your foot down and say, 'Oh wait, I'm taking it back.'"

Euro zone struggles to stem crisis; Obama urges action (Reuters)

NEW YORK/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro-zone officials are working to magnify the firepower of the region's rescue fund, European Central Bank policymakers said on Monday, while President Barack Obama piled on pressure for Europe to staunch a sovereign debt crisis that threatens the world economy.

Obama, saying the crisis "is scaring the world," urged leaders of the 17-nation euro zone to act quickly to help a region where banks have not fully recovered from the 2008 financial crisis and which is now suffering from the Greek government's debt crisis.

"They are trying to take responsible actions but those actions haven't been quite as quick as they need to be," Obama told a citizens' meeting in Mountain View, California.

After meeting at the IMF/World Bank and G20 meetings in Washington D.C. last week, European policymakers said on Monday they are working on ways to shore up the euro zone financial system and prevent the region's government debt crisis from spreading, but their mixed messages on the size of a rescue fund and the role of the ECB underscored the difficulties for 17 euro-zone nations in reaching consensus.

ECB Executive Board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, speaking in New York, said that the 440 billion euros in the bailout fund, known as the European Financial Stability Facility (ESFS), could be used as collateral to borrow from the European Central Bank making more money available for crisis fighting, but it was up to European Union governments to decide how to do this.

"I know that people are thinking about these things. They may not be willing to admit it in the public, but they are thinking about these things," he said, citing the example of two U.S. programs used to recapitalize banks in the 2008-09 financial crisis.

Officials are examining "how to leverage the money out of the EFSF in a more innovative and efficient way," he told a conference organized by Medley Advisors.

But Germany's central banker Jens Weidmann poured scorn on a beefed-up bailout fund. Leveraging the assets could discourage politicians from taking the tough political decisions to cut budget deficits and would weaken faith in the euro, Weidmann said in Washington.

"A bazooka! I don't think it is a recipe that works in Europe," he told the American Council on Germany.

Markets are not concerned about the size of the rescue fund, rather about the political capacity to deliver, he said

"This is a very dangerous thing. It means you completely blur the responsibility between fiscal and monetary policy."

Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble speaking in Berlin also ruled out increasing the size of the fund although he had said in Washington over the weekend that leverage without tapping the ECB was possible.

A senior European official told Reuters on Saturday that the aim was for a five-fold leverage to give the fund the firepower to help bigger economies such as Italy and Spain if necessary. Analysts have estimated that 1-2 trillion euros is needed to achieve that goal and win market confidence.

ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny from Austria said at a Harvard University forum in Massachussetts on Monday that an increase in the fund was likely, but it "might not be a trillion (euros).

Investors are anxious to see a plan big enough to backstop European banks and help debt laden euro zone governments. U.S. stocks jumped when CNBC television reported that a detailed plan was in the works to leverage the fund up to eight-fold and to use the European Investment Bank to issue bonds and buy up sovereign debt of troubled countries via the ECB.

An EU official in Brussels involved in crisis resolution dismissed the CNBC report as "just bizarre." The official said talks are in the early stages and those with the EIB involve infrastructure projects.

PRESSURE

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel pressed for the European Union to strengthen its power to discipline member states that break fiscal rules. Budget deficits are the primary source of Europe's debt crisis and Germany's key concern.

"There should be the right to declare such budgets null and void...otherwise we will not get out of the situation," she said in her strongest language yet on common EU fiscal powers.

Germany's legislature is due to vote this week on expanded EFSF powers and leaders are seeking to quell concerns the new bailout fund would discourage countries from cutting deficits.

Europe came under fierce pressure from the United States and other major economies at weekend talks in Washington to take swift action to stop Greece's debt woes from engulfing bigger euro zone states and harming the world economy.

But officials said reports that planning was already in place for a 50 percent write-down in Greek debt and a vast increase in the euro zone rescue fund were highly premature.

"There is no change to the framework we are working on," said a euro zone official who is involved in decision-making on financial assistance to Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

"All this talk of a specific haircut for Greece or an enlargement of the EFSF, it is all just speculation. We are not working along those lines," said the official.

Merkel, struggling to convince her fractious center-right coalition to back a strengthening of the EFSF in a crucial vote on Thursday, warned that letting Greece default would destroy investor confidence in the euro zone.

Diplomats said any talk of a fallback plan for Greece that would raise the cost to German taxpayers could only make her task more difficult in parliament this week.

DEFAULT WITHIN MONTHS?

Private economists and Brussels think-tanks expect a Greek debt default within months, coupled with a capital injection for European banks and a leveraging up of the EFSF.

Euro zone officials acknowledge that such policy ideas are circulating, but insist planning continues on the basis that Greece's debt burden, which is close to 160 percent of GDP, can be sustained as long as its government cuts its fiscal deficit as demanded by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the so-called troika.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned this weekend that inadequate European crisis management heightens the threat of "cascading default, bank runs and catastrophic risk that must be taken off the table." IMF chief Christine Lagarde, also made clear the euro zone needs to act more decisively, notably to recapitalise banks on a large recapitalizescale.

Quietly, euro zone policy makers accept that a combination of a much deeper Greek debt restructuring allied to coordinated bank recapitalizations and a bolstered rescue fund would make sense, but such a plan would require support from all 17 euro zone countries which can take time in the EU.

"The ideas are all there, but it's not as straightforward as just sitting down and deciding it," said another euro zone financial official involved in handling the crisis.

"Many of us can agree privately that anything less than a 50 percent haircut for Greece would just be cosmetic, but getting that decided by all and implementing it is not so easy."

Star Guard | GameTunnel ? Independent Games and Casual Games ...

Ashley: 6
Star Guard?is a throwback to the old Atari 2600 days in which you play a bright blob on the screen shooting?other bright blobs. The gameplay mechanic have been done to death, but if you love pixelated shooters,?then Star Guard could probably stand to receive your attention. The music is pretty forgettable and sounds like any other 8-bit track out there. In fact, Star Guard feels as though the developer ripped it straight from an Atari 2600 cartridge, which is both a good and a bad thing. Experience it for yourself and become a master of the stars.

Andrew: 7
If the recent success of the revived Mega Man series has taught us anything, it?s that classic gameplay, when done well, really can triumph over flashy graphics. Star Guard places you in the role of a very pixelated, very green little man with a white hand-held blaster. You are tasked with infiltrating a yellow-trimmed black castle in what can best be described as an Atari 2600 classic. You must fight your way through hordes of red rhinos, red mages, red squids and, well, a lot of red things that want you dead. Why? Because a wizard needs slaying, that?s why! It?s not flashy and it?s not lengthy, but it satisfies a certain nostalgic itch.

Andy M: 6
Total retro. If you?re really in the mood for an 8-bit platformer with jumping and shooting as your most difficult tasks, this is the game for you. Well-made levels, fun music, and a story told to you through ?text-over? as you play. It?s nothing innovative, but it?s fun and a great time-killer. If it had been anything more than this, I probably could have afforded it a few more points, but for what it is, it?s good. It just isn?t much more than that.

Stew: 9
Perfectly emulating 1980s retro style, Star Guard is the kind of awesome that never gets old. Built around simple, fast-paced platforming, it strikes a good balance between difficulty and accessibility.?While each level brings with it new challenges, frequent checkpoints make them far more manageable,?allowing for frustration free trial and error. If the game has any flaws it?s that it can be too accessible at times. While I can?t really call Star Guard a pushover,?it gives you unlimited lives which really lowers the stakes when you reach a new obstacle. Despite some really cool enemy and trap designs, death is made a bit inconsequential when you?ll just respawn five feet away to try again. Then again, the demo version doesn?t give access to the Hard or Trial modes, so those might resolve this issue altogether. Either way, Star Guard rocks. Play it.

The U.S. at the U.N.: The foreign-policy version of the S&P downgrade (The Envoy)

President Barack Obama addressed the UN on Sept. 21, 2011. (Jason DeCrow/AP)

When Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, holding aloft his nation's United Nations application bid, finished his rousing speech to the U.N. General Assembly last Friday, only two diplomatic delegations in the world body were left sitting looking glum and dejected amid the thunderous applause and standing ovation: those of the United States and Israel.

American officials portrayed a subsequent Quartet statement calling for new peace talks as vindication. But for some observers, the bruising week for the United States at the United Nations and the sense of American international isolation in opposing upgraded Palestinian status had the feeling of a decisive turning point--the foreign policy equivalent of the S&P's downgrading of? the federal government's credit rating, after the vicious Congressional fight last month over raising the debt ceiling.

President Barack Obama has never had so many domestic political constraints on his foreign policy leadership.?He is struggling with a protracted economic crisis and an unemployment rate over 9 percent, blocked by the Republican Congress on spending resolutions month by month, and facing criticism of his pro-Israel credentials from Republican presidential candidates, all while serving as president of a nation still involved in two wars, and while simultaneously running in his 2012 presidential reelection campaign,

Obama's notably sober speech last week to the United Nations--where he has been a figure of immense international fascination--amplified the sense that his administration is, if not exhausted, in the middle of a long, hard slog.?"Peace is hard," Obama told the world body. "Progress can be reversed. Prosperity comes slowly. Societies can split apart. ... And we have more work to do."

"In talking to diplomats who participated in the discussions about Israel and Palestine and other issues, I think it is clear that they think the U.S. is in a weakened position when it comes to leadership," said David Rothkopf, a former Clinton administration official and Foreign Policy magazine contributor, in an interview Monday with The Envoy.

Rothkopf attributed the perception of diminished American leadership to several issues. "The U.S. is consumed with its own problems," he said, describing the perceptions that various foreign diplomats have relayed to him in recent days. "Obama has entered campaign mode and is not engaging on international issues in as serious a way. There is some division, even dysfunction to the [U.S.] administration's [foreign policy] team."

Finally, Rothkopf said, some of his diplomatic contacts have concluded that Obama himself is "not a leader. ... he's defensive. ... Obama is [perceived to be] boxed in politically at home."

The management of the vexing Israeli-Palestinian peace process--which Washington has led on and off for the past two decades--is a key barometer by which foreign leaders and populations evaluate American effectiveness and strength. And to the detriment of Obama's global leadership, "the peace process is broken," Rothkopf said. "It is not producing results. And the result is that the U.S. is put in the perverse position of defending the status quo--which is the only place it feels it has leverage left--at least in the minds of the administration."

"At the end of the day, the Palestinians have a huge amount of leverage," Rothkopf said. "They are clearly the ones who were playing offense, while everybody else was" playing defense.

Other Obama administration allies in the foreign policy community say that while there's no doubt that American power is retracting due to the economic crisis and other issues, it's a bit overblown to assess the drama at the United Nations last week as a decisive turning point.

"Obama had to go to New York and say, [in effect], 'Look, despite our incredibly dysfunctional politics, we still are a nation the world can't move forward without,'" said Heather Hurlburt, a former Clinton administration official who heads the progressive National Security Network, in an interview Monday with The Envoy. "He gave it his best shot. But until our whole political establishment decides that it matters," it's hard for Obama to expend the political capital on?midwifing?the peace process, she said.

"I think you could argue that the U.S. had two big victories at the U.N.: it got the international community to step up on Libya, and it was able to avert a showdown on Palestine," Jon Alterman, a Middle East expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told The Envoy. "If you asked them a week ago what were your goals [for the UN], they would argue the goals were achieved."

Still, Alterman conceded, "there's no question that our domestic politics affect our foreign policy."

"Partly that has to do with perceptions of the president," he said. "More fundamentally it has to do with the sense that the United States is a wavering actor in the world. That its financial resources are unclear; military commitments are uncertain. And that its ability to accomplish its goals after both [the wars in] Iraq and Afghanistan is in doubt. But it didn't get that way overnight."

"The reality is that we knew for some time that the U.S. is not able to solve this [Middle East peace] issue by itself," a European official told The Envoy last week, on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic matter. "There are? constraints in the region and it makes it very difficult even for the U.S. president whose first phone call [after his inauguration] was with Abbas to achieve such influence. It is not his fault. The dynamics of the region are very difficult."

Weelicious ? ? Fast, Easy & Fresh Homemade Home Made Baby ...

When I was a kid and went out to dinner with my family, few things made me feel as grown up as getting to order a Shirley Temple. Made from ginger ale, grenadine syrup, a bit of OJ and topped off with a maraschino cherry, this drink was the most special of special treats to me.

When we went on vacation this summer, I would occasionally make my kids (and me and hubby) special cocktails to cap off a long day of play. Using just a bit of juice, some cut up fresh fruit and sparking water ? and a fun straw or umbrella ? it was something the kids looked forward to every day and it was so cute to watch them sit there each evening holding their pretty drinks and feeling grown up.

This virgin sangria is my take on the beloved Shirley Temple of my youth, but without all the sugar and high fructose corn syrup from the soda and grenadine. And when you get into the fall and winter months and you want to pretend you?re on vacation even though you can?t get away, just substitute any of your favorite seasonal fruits to make a yer round refreshing cocktail that everyone in the family can enjoy.

Kiddie Sangria (Serves 4)

1 Peach, pitted and sliced
1/2 Cup Strawberries, stems removed and quartered
1 Lemon, halved & sliced
2 Cups Cranberry and/or Orange Juice
2 Cups Sparkling Water or Club Soda

1. Place the first 4 ingredients in a pitcher and chill in the fridge for one hour.
2. When ready to serve, stir in 2 cups of sparkling water.
3. Serve.

IPL Cricket Rocking the People of India ? the Fever Has Started ...

What is the number one sport in the world today? If you think soccer or football for the English, then you would be right. But do you know what the second most famous sport in the world is? Can you guess? Basketball? Baseball? Formula 1 racing? The second most watched sport in the world is actually cricket. It is quite outstanding that most people do not know this. It actually has a fan base of more than a billion and most of them are from India which carries about nearly a billion fans and take note that there are about 1.2 billion people in India.

You can safely conclude then that the sport of cricket is big in India and it is especially in the India Premier League. This league can be equated to the soccer equivalent of England which is the Barclay?s Premier League. And just like its English counterpart, the IPL is where top-notch cricket players meet and face off into ten teams and their players are also of different nationalities. It was formed from the ashes of a disagreement between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and another known Indian premier league which is the Indian Cricket League. But out of this squabble came forth a still-growing multi-billion franchise that is making the sport of cricket big in many parts of the world. The IPL cricket online brand value has been valued at $4.13 billion by a UK-based brand valuation consultancy firm. The franchises or the ten leagues under it earn millions of dollars every year from endorsements and merchandise. According to the global sports salaries review, the second highest paying player in the sporting world is from the IPL. In fact, an IPL player can earn as much as $3.84 million in a little more than a year. It has also gotten the attention of a Swiss watch maker, Bandelier, as the official watch of the India Premier League.

Cricket is getting bigger as time flies and so are the numbers of fans. Quite a lot of these fans are willing to travel just to see the many matches. The IPL tickets before are usually bought in ticket booths but now the IPL has launched an online ticket booth where people can buy their IPL tickets with just a few clicks.

To address this, the IPL has also opened online ticketing booths so many can now buy IPL tickets 2012 via the internet which eliminates the inconvenience of the line. As mentioned earlier, the IPL cricket is now spreading all over the world and in one particular province in Canada, it has garnered itself a place in many fans? hearts. PEI Cricket or the Prince Edward?s Islands has already a big fan base. In fact, there are now plans in launching their own National Women?s Team aside from the male team. Indeed, the fans of the Cricket on PEI are getting some serious mojo about this sport. Cricket is a big sport and with the help of the India Premier League and also the fans of cricket on PEI, this sport will surely reach great heights as its nearest rival, soccer.

25th September 2011 Cat: Uncategorized with

I was doing some yard work and I noticed that the exposed cinder block below my siding, but above the ground had some crack-age and was missing some ?filling?. Can I buy something to fill this in, or it is a more intensive repair?
it only appears to be above the ground. it looks as though the concret that was used to put the block together wore away in a few spaces. It looks like the previous owners filled these spots in with something. When I got the home inspection, he didnt seem to think it was a big deal

Best answer about crack in foundation blocks?

Answer by opal1331
Home improvement stores such as Home Depot, and Lowes, sell a two part epoxy compound that works like a putty, just knead until smooth and even, press into the crack and it will expand and seal. providing of course the crack is not below grade, in that case I would consult a masonry contractor for his advise.

Riding the Brandverb Wagon Without a Seat Belt - Legal News ...

I heard a radio spot the other day for Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based department store retailer Kohl's: "The More You Know, The More You Kohl's." Apparently not a new example of brandverbing, yet it continues, despite the ridicule of being called "The Absolute DUMBEST Slogan Ever," enduring grammatical criticism from at least one employee, facing a federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed by NewEgg (anyone know the status?), and despite these words of wisdom from Smart Marketing Strategy Blog, back when the slogan first launched: "Kohl's is a place, not an action. If the more you know, the more you Kohl's, then you are "Kohling" when you shop there. You don't go "Kohling" just like you don't go "Krogering." A smarter marketing strategy for Kohl's might be to focus on the fact that its sales extend to everything in the store, unlike competitors whose sale coupons have limited applicability. Kohl's makes this point in its current advertising campaign, but it's a secondary message." So, Kohl's, from the legal perspective, why no trademark registration for the slogan that won't go away, even upon request? Atlantic surprise | Food & Drink Feature | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE ...

Nova Scotia has had a commercial wine industry since the late '70s, early '80s when Roger Dial opened the original Grand Pr? and created some head-turning, palate pleasing wines that surprised the rest of Canada. But the industry didn't exactly explode after that. Recently, though, the fuse seems to be have been relit and, if NS wine didn't quite detonate with the visit of national wine judges and journalists for the 2011 Canadian Wine Awards in August, it certainly approached the boiling point.

For the first time, Wine Access magazine brought its national wine competition to an alternate wine region. This says a lot, that important wine people outside our region are noticing our wines, paying attention.

Local booze writers like me can shout out our love until we're purple in the face, but until key people from across the country and the world taste them for themselves, they'll remain a local secret.

But now the cat is out of the bag, the grapes are squished and the corks are popped. It's out there. We've turned the corner. We have some great wines. And the world knows. How did this happen?

Was it the consecutive vertical vintage tastings of stellar traditional method (a la champagne) bubblies at sparkling specialists L'Acadie Vineyards and Benjamin Bridge that did the trick? Perhaps. These wines are remarkable.

But it could have been the next day's terroir overview (literally) from the significantly elevated Luckett Vineyards followed by a sampling of what are consistently the best table wines in Nova Scotia: Gaspereau Vineyards (just crowned Winery of the Year at the Atlantic Canadian Wine Awards), in behind the winery with Jost/Gaspereau owner Hans Christian Jost and winemaker Gina Haverstock. When those cross-country writers tasted the riesling, you could see them all looking at each other with that knowing gaze: "This is the good stuff!"

Or it may have been dinner at Le Caveau at Domaine De Grand Pr?, at the site of Roger Dial's original winery, a decade ago reborn under the Stutz family from Switzerland, making perfectly clean, varietally correct wines like their L'Acadie Blanc, Ortega and Tidal Bay---a white blend that exemplifies the new Tidal Bay appellation.

For me, the deciding moment was after the competition was over and most of the others had left. I visited the new Avondale Sky winery, then Blomidon Estate, with my brother Jeff and Quebec writer Remy Charest. The gorgeous converted church of Avondale and quirky wines from Ben Swetnam perked my palate, and then the samples of unreleased traditional method sparkling wines and barrel-aging 2010 chardonnay from Simon Rafuse at Blomidon really blew my mind.

I have not had better from Canada, and Canada makes some pretty kickass chardonnay. If that kind of wine can come out of Nova Scotia three years out of 10, who knows what can happen?

As Jost told me during the winery tours, there are over 100 acres of perfectly good land just waiting to be planted in Nova Scotia. Now that the rest of Canada knows we can make great wines, what should we do?

Should we fire a bunch of riesling in the ground, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir in the hopes of duplicating the great wines of France and Germany? Or should we just keep planting L'Acadie and other varieties that are guaranteed to make good wine most every year, and try to make more "everyday" wine that we can market to Nova Scotians for their house wines, to replace foreign juice? Maybe we should do both.

The industry is at a major decision point, and it will be interesting to see where it goes, whether it will flash and burn or grow steadily, sustained and controlled.

P0rn Stars Opening Adult Content Gaming Site - Geekologie

MORE: forever alone, gamer girls, gamers, iffy, nice try, no no no no no, no thank you, pass, pr0n, questionable, sadness, this is going to last, video games, website, you gotta keep 'em separated!, you're doing it wrong

nudie-gamer-site.jpg

Sexy finger-biting: you give it a bad name.

In between getting boned or whatever scenes, p0rn stars Alana Evans and Misti Dawn are apparently hard core gamers. So what are they doing? Opening a website that combines video game reviews, playthroughs and a bunch of other garbo, but with toplessness. Now listen: I love man as much as the next boobs, but this shit sounds lame. "Um...GW?" I MEANT WHAT I SAID.

Evans came up with the initial idea to combine pornography and game coverage, and invited Dawn to the project straight away. "Misti is probably the most dedicated gamer girl I know, so she was the obvious choice as my partner," said Evans. The launch date - September 20 - is also no accident: Evans chose the site's launch date to coincide with the release of Gears of War 3. "I am a huge Gears of War fan," Evans explained.

Gamers will be able to watch and communicate with Evans and Dawn in real-time via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network

Call me oldschool, but I like to keep my video games and p0rn separate, you know? It's like, until we have lifelike virtual reality sex games, why blur the line? "Pfft, what's the worst that could happen?" HA -- obviously you've never come home to a roommate masturbating to Resident Evil before. *ahem* Derek!

Yemeni forces kill 21 more protesters in capital (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? Yemeni security forces killed 21 people, some shot by snipers from rooftops, in a crowd of demonstrators on Monday in the worst bloodshed seen since March against a protest movement demanding the removal of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Medics said a further 113 protesters were wounded in the capital Sanaa, a day after 26 demonstrators in a massive anti-government march were shot dead.

Gunfire and shelling echoed sporadically across the divided capital as pro-Saleh troops and protesters clashed on Monday.

"Help me, oh my God look at this slaughter!" said the father of a boy who died from a gunshot wound to the head.

"We were just in the car on Hayel Street (near the fighting). I stepped out to get some food and left my two boys in the car and I heard the older one scream. The little one was shot straight through the head."

Government troops were firing into the air to scatter demonstrators, according to witnesses. But a Reuters reporter saw snipers shooting from rooftops and upper stories of buildings into the throng of demonstrators. Some of the deaths appeared to have been caused by rocket-propelled grenades.

Injured people were whisked on motorcycles to a makeshift hospital in protester-dubbed Change Square where people have been camped for eight months calling for an end to Saleh's 33 years of repressive rule in the poor Arabian Peninsula state.

The gunfire at protesters sparked a nearly one-hour firefight between General Ali Mohsen's First Armoured Division troops, which defected to the protest side some months ago, and government forces. Trucks full of Mohsen troops could be seen rushing from Change Square in the direction of the gunfire.

Mohsen's office said their base had seen flyovers by Yemeni warplanes, prompting it to fire missiles in response.

Yemen is politically paralyzed as Saleh, now being treated in Saudi Arabia for wounds suffered in an assassination attempt, clings to power despite mass nationwide protests. The turmoil could strengthen the Yemen branch of al Qaeda and heighten the risk of militant attacks on U.S. and Saudi targets abroad.

The new bloodshed, shredding a weeks-long stand-off, was the worst since a similar massacre killed 52 people in mid-March.

At another hospital, ambulances were arriving with shattered windows and pockmarked with bullet holes. Copies of the Koran were laid on the chests of the dead.

CHAOS LOOMING?

Despite eight months of protests, and an assassination attempt in June that severely injured Saleh and sent him to Riyadh for surgical treatment, there has been little progress toward overcoming the political impasse, despite numerous diplomatic attempts to broker a transfer of power.

"I fear the situation will get out of hand. There is no new initiative to cool things off and the other political players doubt that Saleh will abide by any terms that are set," said Saadaldeen Talib, a former Yemeni opposition parliamentarian.

"Complete disintegration and chaos might come very soon."

U.N. mediator Jamal bin Omar landed in Sanaa on Monday to review the latest developments, the state news agency SABA said.

Abdullatif al-Zayani, head of a bloc of wealthy Gulf neighbors of Yemen, was expected to arrive in Sanaa later on Monday to try again to win acceptance of a Gulf plan for a transition of power away from Saleh that the president came close to accepting on three occasions, before backpedalling.

Monday's violence erupted as protesters tried to push further into areas of Sanaa controlled by government forces after extending their camp overnight to a junction known locally as Kentucky Roundabout.

Abdulwasia Dahnai, 39, said as he lay on a hospital floor awaiting treatment: "We marched to Kentucky Roundabout. I heard gunshots from above, looked up and could see gunfire coming from the building. Next thing I knew I felt a gunshot in my side."

The area had previously marked the dividing line between parts of Sanaa held by loyalist troops and defected forces.

"The thugs are hurting our brothers. We will go, the road is open. The free men will meet at Kentucky Roundabout!" organizers shouted over loudspeakers in Change Square.

Initially on Monday, anti-Saleh troops under General Mohsen had blocked the protesters' efforts to advance, in an apparent attempt to defuse the situation. Some Mohsen soldiers wound up among the injured at hospitals.

PROTESTER KILLINGS TO BE PROBED

In Geneva on Monday, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr Abdullah Al-Qirbi said Sunday's bloodshed would be investigated and perpetrators would be prosecuted.

In a speech to the U.N. Human Rights Council, he said: "The government of Yemen expresses its sorrow and condemnation for all acts of violence and bloodshed as those that happened yesterday in Sanaa. The government will investigate and hold accountable all those in charge of these acts."

Sanaa for months has been split between Mohsen's breakaway troops and Saleh loyalist forces in a maze of checkpoints, roadblocks and armoured vehicles that many worry could quickly tip inflamed tensions into military confrontation.

Protesters on Monday managed to extend the territory of their camp by around one kilometers after hundreds slept there overnight. Mohsen's troops entered the area and were fortifying it with sandbags.

The new staked-out area brought protesters and troops backing them within 500 meters (1,650 feet) of the office of Ahmed Ali Saleh, the president's son and head of the Republican Guard units loyal to the government.

"I will go back out today once the doctors check the wound," said Dhuyazen al-Shiah, 23, whose eye was bandaged after bullet fragments hit his face in Sunday's clashes.

"I do this because I was tired of living with no dignity. I worked as a smuggler through Saudi Arabia because I couldn't find a job here. I am committed to this now. I'll keep going and either succeed or I'll die."

Further south, militants suspected of links to al Qaeda clashed with the army in the Abyan provincial capital of Zinjibar, just over a week after Yemen declared its troops had "liberated" the city from Islamist fighters.

Six militants were killed and three soldiers wounded in the fighting in the east of Zinjibar, a security official and residents said on Monday.

"Yemen is on a knife edge," Peter Splinter of human rights group Amnesty International told the top U.N. human rights forum in Geneva, adding the risk of civil war was growing.

"Those who have been protesting peacefully for change are increasingly frustrated by the political deadlock."

BBC: 6 independent filmmakers arrested in Iran (AP)

LONDON ? Six independent filmmakers have been detained in Iran, the BBC said Monday, denying an Iranian media report that the group were the broadcasters' staffers.

The BBC said in a statement that the group consisted of "independent documentary filmmakers." It added that while the BBC's Farsi-language service had bought the rights to their films, it had not commissioned their work.

The filmmakers "are not BBC staffers," the broadcaster said in a statement.

Earlier Monday, Iranian state television reported that authorities had arrested five people for working for the BBC Persian service, alleging that the group was providing the London-based broadcaster with what it described as negative news reports on Iran.

The report did not identify the detained by their full names.

Iranian officials are strongly opposed to the channel, which they accuse, along with the British government, of fomenting the mass protests that broke out after Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election.

The BBC denies the charge, and says its satellite broadcasts are routinely jammed.

Senior BBC official Liliane Landor said the broadcaster considered the detentions to be "part of ongoing efforts by the Iranian government to put pressure on the BBC for the impartial and balanced coverage of its Persian-language TV of events in Iran and the wider region."

Iran has arrested a slew of journalists and bloggers in recent years.

What Took so Long? | Fatherhood Etc.

Eugene Public Library

Yesterday, I got a library card.

Finally!

So what took so long? Well, when I first moved to Eugene (in 1995) I attended the University of Oregon and had access to a world-class academic library. I had no need for a public library, so I never bothered to get a card. I never even set foot in the old downtown library.

After I graduated, I signed up for a Barnes and Noble membership and they started sending me discount coupons. We had more disposable income at the time (this was in the middle of the last decade, before the economy tanked) and I loved browsing through bookstores, so I bought all my books. Once Anna was old enough I started taking her to the library for storytime, but we still didn?t get a library card. We had tons of kids books at home as well.

Then came 2009 and suddenly we had to get by on a lot less money. This was when I first thought about getting a library card, but I kept putting it off. Meanwhile, I discovered the book section at St. Vincent de Paul. I remember the day I passed on buying a book at B&N (I wanted it, I just didn?t want to pay full price) then, later that day, found the same book for $1.50 at St. Vinnie?s. I was sold.

The only drawback? I couldn?t always find the book I wanted. Until this week, that wasn?t a problem. I?ve got a backlog of books to get through, so I keep a ?wish list? handy and look each time I?m at St. Vinnie?s. Then I needed a book right away. What was my best shot? The library.

So yesterday I broke down and got a library card. I found the book I needed in about five minutes and I?ve already started reading it.

What took me so long? Just making excuses until I couldn?t anymore. But isn?t that the way it always goes?

NSAIDs may be risky early in pregnancy

Some common painkillers appear to more than double the odds of losing fetus

Web edition : Thursday, September 15th, 2011

The popular anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen and naproxen could contribute to the risk of miscarriage when taken early in pregnancy, researchers report online September 6 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Other research has indicated that the common painkillers collectively known as NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can impart some danger to a fetus. Pill bottles caution pregnant women to consult their doctors before taking the drugs, and specifically to avoid NSAIDs during the final three months of gestation. The new study bolsters evidence that would extend that caution to the first trimester.

?Women who are thinking about getting pregnant and have stopped using contraception ? or just someone in reproductive age ? should be a little careful,? says epidemiologist De-Kun Li of Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, who wasn?t involved in the study.??

In Quebec province, where the study was done, NSAIDs are typically obtained by prescription, with the exception of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), which is also available over the counter. University of Montreal epidemiologist Anick B?rard and her colleagues checked prescriptions filled by 4,700 women who had miscarriages and about 47,000 other pregnant women who didn?t.

During the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, 7.5 percent of those who miscarried had filled an NSAID prescription beforehand, compared with only 2.6 percent the women who hadn?t miscarried.

Use of NSAIDs was associated with a 2.4-fold increase in risk of miscarriage. The researchers checked for use of ibuprofen, naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex), rofecoxib (Vioxx) and diclofenac, which has many trade names. They didn?t include aspirin, an NSAID, in the measurements, or acetaminophen (Tylenol), which isn?t an NSAID.

In the United States, ibuprofen and naproxen are widely available without a prescription. ?As a rule, people think over-the-counter medications are less toxic than prescription meds, but many times it?s not true,? B?rard says.

NSAIDs have broad effects because they inhibit two enzymes, a process that slows the synthesis of chemical messengers called prostaglandins. These messengers are instrumental in inflammation and are among the compounds that induce fever. The ability to limit these effects, coupled with effective marketing, has placed NSAIDs among the best-selling drugs in the world.

But prostaglandins also play a role in reproduction, and studies in animals have shown that a lack of prostaglandins can lead to defective embryo implantation in the uterus.

In its pregnancy handbook, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists counsels women to generally avoid aspirin and other NSAIDs. But advice from other sources on the first-trimester risks has been mixed, in part because scientists must rely on animal tests of the drugs. A trial testing the risks of NSAIDs versus no NSAIDs in pregnant women won?t happen, Li says, because it would be unethical to dole out drugs that could potentially harm a fetus.

Any kind of artist, whether an artist that paints, draws, or sketches, has specific products that they like to use and that they come familiar with. The same is true for a tattoo artist, who is choosing a favorite tattoo machine just the way a painter would find a paintbrush that they truly enjoy using.

There is an older saying that any artist is also only as good as whatever tools are used by them. This is certainly true for tattoo artists, especially since they?re doing something that is so personal to people and that requires such detail, precision and skill. Once you find the right equipment, such as a tattoo machine for instance, you?ll be able to even further improve upon your skills.

However, if you?re a tattoo artist and even if you?re able to design an incredible tattoo, the tattoo might not be as incredible if the tattoo machine you?re using isn?t a good product that delivers favorable results for your customers.

Having tattoo supplies that are well made and durable are essential to any tattoo artist, and even if you have to go through tons of tattooing kits just to figure out what?s right for you, it?s absolutely worth it, because that?s an investment into something that will only bring you a return on your investment and time. Simply compare it to a contractor who has a cheap hammer, and the hammer breaks off after only a few uses or isn?t heavy enough to adequately drive nails into something they?re building; the same goes for you as a tattoo artist, as you have to have a tool that you can rely on and that won?t be able to support your strength and fully meet your expectations and your customers. Experimenting with different tattooing kits will allow you to make the most accurate decision possible.

Also similar a carpenter?s tools, not only will you want to make sure you?re purchasing a tattoo machine and tattooing kits that live up to your expectations and that get the job done right, you?ll also want to consider what kind of work you?re going to be doing. Will you be doing tattoos the majority of the time that require a lot of shading, color that is solid, or lots of lining work? Considering what work you are taking on will also determine what tools you should have.

Tattooing is your skill, and to not only get the job done, you confidently tackle the job and finish it well.

If you?re looking for a quality, top of the line tattoo machine that will deliver the results you need, visit ToxicTwit.com and check out this online vendor?s variety of tattoo machines as well as a large option of tattooing kits. BofA must pay Countrywide informant $930K

Bank of America has been ordered to pay a former employee $930,000 for violating federal whistleblower protection laws.

The Labor Department also ordered the bank to reinstate the worker.

The employee, who worked for Countrywide Financial Corp., was fired shortly after the mortgage lender was bought by Bank of America Corp. in 2008.

The Los Angeles-area employee led internal investigations that revealed widespread and pervasive wire, mail and bank fraud involving Countrywide employees, according to a Labor Department statement Wednesday.

The payment will cover back wages, interest, compensatory damages and attorney fees.

"It's clear from our investigation that Bank of America used illegal retaliatory tactics against this employee," said David Michaels, assistant secretary of the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. "This employee showed great courage reporting potential fraud and standing up for the rights of other employees to do the same."

The employee said those who attempted to report fraud to Countrywide's Employee Relations Department suffered persistent retaliation.

Bank of America said it plans to challenge the order. The Charlotte, N.C. bank said it dismissed the employee because of issues related to management style rather than the complaints. The bank said it takes allegations of fraud seriously and that the employees allegations were investigated and appropriate actions were taken.

Bank of America's ill-fated acquisition of Countrywide has led to heavy financial losses, lawsuits and regulatory probes. The bank's stock lost 48 percent this year, largely because of problems related to poorly-written mortgages at Countrywide. In the first half of the year the bank paid out $12.7 billion to settle claims from investors that it sold them securities backed by faulty mortgages.

Palestinian state-building drive threatened: U.N., IMF (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? A shortfall in donor aid, tough Israeli trade restrictions and diplomatic paralysis are jeopardizing Palestinian efforts to build a viable economy and strong institutions, the IMF and United Nations said in separate reports on Wednesday.

Released just days before Palestinian leaders go to the United Nations to press their claim for statehood, the two reports said the Palestinian Authority had completed its goal of preparing the necessary bodies to run an independent state.

But they both said dangers lay ahead in the economic and political spheres that could undermine the state-building achievements of the past two years.

"I am very worried about the disconnect between what the PA has achieved on the ground, and where the political process stands," said Robert Serry, the U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.

"The reality is that there is only so much that can be done in conditions of prolonged occupation, unresolved final status issues, no serious progress on a two state solution and a continuing Palestinian divide," he added.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he is going to the United Nations because direct peace negotiations with the Israelis have reached a dead end after collapsing last year in a row over Israeli settlement building in the West Bank.

Israel has condemned the unilateral quest for statehood recognition, and ministers have warned of possible retaliation, including withholding funds, if the Palestinians press on.

Washington is also opposed to the U.N. initiative and some officials warn they will try to cut annual U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which runs to some $450 million.

ECONOMIC WORRIES

The PA, which exercises limited self government in parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, is reliant on foreign aid to fill a deficit projected at $900 million this year.

The International Monetary Fund said the Palestinian economy was already suffering from a sharp drop in handouts, with disbursements in the first 8 months of 2011 totaling $400 million, some $300 million less than expected.

"The recent aid shortfalls are posing serious risks to the PA's state-building capacity, especially given its still high aid dependence," the Washington-based IMF said.

The PA has blamed Arab states for failing to honor past commitments and says this lack of funds has prevented it from paying salaries to its 150,000 employees on time and in full in two of the last three months.

The IMF said the general economic outlook had clouded, with growth in the West Bank coming in at just a 4 percent annual rate in the first half of 2011 from 8 percent for the whole of 2010.

Growth in Gaza surged to 28 percent in the same period, from 15 percent in 2010. But the IMF said this strength was catch-up after Israel eased its blockade on the Hamas-ruled enclave in mid-2010, and output remains lower today than it was in 2005.

Unemployment in Gaza stood at 28 percent, down from 37 percent in 2010. It was steady in the West Bank at 16 percent.

"To maintain the growth momentum, rebalance the composition of output and accelerate the state-building process, it is essential for the government of Israel to phase out all economic restrictions as soon as possible," the IMF said.

The United Nations highlighted the problems of Israeli restrictions, which include various import and export controls, limitations on the movement of Palestinians within the West Bank and a near total ban on Gazans from entering Israel.

"We saw good steps in this regard during 2009 and 2010, but we haven't seen bolder steps since then. If the weight of the occupation is not being lifted, all the achievements to date will be increasingly difficult to sustain," Serry said.
