Logic+Emotion: Move Over Entrepreneurs, Here Come The ...

Originally posted on Forbes

In the wake of?Facebook?s IPO, and despite where the stock goes from here, one thing is clear:?Entrepreneurs?especially successful ones?arethe new rock stars of business culture. Despite this trend, the reality remains that for every successful entrepreneur who builds even a modestly successful business, there are thousands who struggle and toil endlessly and may never see the fruits of their labor come anywhere close to commercial success. Add that to the fact that while entrepreneurialism seems to be enjoying a golden age of sorts, it isn?t for everyone.

Some individuals don?t want to go off on their own and build something from scratch wearing every hat (or hoodie) under the sun in order to find professional fulfillment.? There?s no shortage of books and media messages that paint the world in black and white in this regard. You are either a faceless corporate cog in the machine of a large, soulless organization, or you are fighting the good fight as a free and independent entrepreneur in charge of his own destiny. But I?m here to tell you from experience that there is a third way, and it?s called being an intrapreneur.

What does that mean exactly?

An intrapreneur is someone who has an entrepreneurial streak in his or her DNA, but chooses to align his or her talents with a large organization in place of creating his or her own. To the classic entrepreneur this may be puzzling, but to what I think is a growing class of 21st Century ?employees,? it may sound like the best of both worlds. I didn?t come up with the word ?intrapreneur,? but several years ago when I struck up a conversation with an older gentleman at a train station and I described what I did for a living, he said something I?ll never forget: ?Oh, you?re an intrapreneur?so was I.?

And I?m not alone. Some of my peers who are doing work in the social business industry also are intrapreneurs whether they suspect it or not. Scott Monty of Ford, Ekaterina Walter of?Intel, Richard Binhammer of?Dell, Pete Blackshaw of Nestl?, Bonin Bough of Kraft and Frank Eliason of Citi, to name a few?and I could go on and on here. The start-up community has successfully demonstrated that the modern world needs entrepreneurs. For every app, social network, or new Web service you discover with delight?there are entrepreneurs behind them. But this only makes intrapreneurs more critical, because in a world filled with fast-moving change, a large organization that becomes complacent and loses sight of the benefits of having an entrepreneurial streak built into their massive global systems can find themselves disrupted in short order.

This is where intrapreneurs come in handy. Smart organizations will seek out individuals who like to invent, innovate and want to be on the front lines of change. These individuals can work independently but even more important can work seamlessly as part of an integrated team structure and also effectively embrace and embody the culture of the intrapreneur?s host organization. Intrapreneurs are most successful when management/leadership empowers and supports them and in turn the intrapreneurs represent the best interests of their organizations while earning the respect of corporate peers. So here?s to intrapreneurs everywhere: The corporate world needs us now more than ever, and you might just be one without knowing it.

Former NFL Player Bobby Sippio Arrested on Attempted Murder Charge in Florida

Former NFL Player Bobby Sippio, who has seemingly bounced around every professional league with the exception of the Lingerie Football League, was arrested Thursday night after kidnapping, beating and threatening to kill his girlfriend?s brother.

The details from the Orlando Sentinel

Sippio, 31, picked up Sergio Moore, 27, from his apartment in Orlando about 11 p.m. Thursday, an Osceola sheriff?s report shows. Moore told deputies he thought he was going to help Sippio and his friend Santana Coats, 30, move furniture.

Instead, Sippio pulled a gun out of the center console, Moore told investigators. Moore tried to open the door and the windows, but they apparently had been locked on the driver?s side.

Sippio drove to a rural section of Osceola County off Poinciana Boulevard ? Sippio is a former Osceola High School Kowboys quarterback ? and forced Moore out of the car in a pasture off Oren Brown Road, a sheriff?s report states.

There, Coats and the 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound Sippio punched and kicked Moore and Coats pointed the gun at him, he told deputies. Sippio told Moore that his sister could not save him, a sheriff?s report states.

After the beating, Coats and Sippio continued to terrorize Moore with the gun as they drove him home, according to deputies. Sippio and Moore are roommates, investigators said.

Moore sustained a broken nose, a swollen left hand and wrist and lacerations to the top of his head and cheek. Law officers interviewed him about 4:45 a.m. Friday at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Sippio played the last two seasons with the Orlando Predators of the Arena League, spent some time in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions. He is the second cousin of Chiefs star Dwayne Bowe.

Analysis: Are British bonds a riskier bet than they look?

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors fleeing the euro zone to seek safety in British government bonds may be taking a riskier bet than they think: The ultra-low interest rates the shrinking UK economy is paying look unlikely to last.

British government bonds, nicknamed gilts after the gold leaf that used to adorn the paper certificates, have surged in price alongside U.S. and German government debt as investors have scurried away from riskier stocks and the questionable debt of crisis-hit, mainly southern, euro zone countries.

They have been helped along also by huge stimulus buying from the Bank of England, which it suggested in minutes released on Wednesday it is willing to start up again if the economy worsens.

But gilts may not be as safe a haven as some investors are counting on, with Britain suffering from hefty public borrowing, relatively high inflation and significant exposure to any worsening the euro zone economy itself.

"The UK has essentially used up all of its wiggle room," said Sam Hill, a fixed income strategist at RBC who previously worked for fund managers Threadneedle Investments. "The UK might be in some ways separate, but would equally still be dragged down ... if there was a more severe outcome in Europe."

Investors' desire to avoid risky assets -- along with pump-priming buying by the Bank of England -- has sharply reduced the annual interest rate, or yield, that Britain's government has to pay on new debt.

For benchmark 10-year gilts, the yield sank to 1.809 percent on Friday from over 4 percent in more normal times a couple of years ago. It was lowest yield since similar gilts were first issued after World War Two.

Over the same two-year period, a markedly different view of Spanish debt has taken yields from 4 percent to over 6 percent. Demand for German debt, meanwhile, has been even greater than for British -- two-year government bonds sold on Wednesday will pay nothing.

The falling return on gilts, however, does not reflect any reduction in their outright risk. The cost of insuring gilts against default has risen almost 30 percent over the past year, compared with an unchanged cost for U.S. debt.

Despite this, 10-year gilts offer a yield that is only 0.1 percentage points higher than U.S. Treasuries and 0.4 percentage points over German Bunds.

"I wouldn't say gilts are a particularly good investment relative to Treasuries," said Ian Fishwick, a fixed-income fund manager at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, which holds about 2.5 billion pounds of gilts.

"The UK does have a problem with the scale of public debt and ... the dollar's reserve currency status is a lot more secure than sterling's," he added.

PROBLEMS LURK

Britain's annual government borrowing amounts to more than 8 percent of gross domestic product. This is roughly triple Germany's rate of borrowing, and only slightly below that in the United States - which has the advantage of stronger long-term growth with which to service the debt.

Moreover, Britain's economy and banking system is much more vulnerable to a euro zone downturn than the United States is, with around half of Britain's trade going to the rest of Europe.

"The main scenario where you would say it is over for gilts is a loss of credibility in the government's fiscal credibility, and that's a scenario that you could imagine if there was a nasty euro break up," said RBC's Hill.

Despite these reservations, fund managers such as Fishwick still believe that on balance it is safer for UK investors to keep at least some assets in gilts than the alternatives.

Others share this view too, and over the past 12 months, 10-year gilt prices have risen by around 15 percent, teaching a painful lesson to those who felt they were already overpriced.

However, many analysts do not expect these gains to be sustained and think a gradual fall in gilt prices as the economy recovers is the most likely medium-term scenario.

From an investor's point of view, taking a moderate loss on a gilt portfolio in the event of an economic upturn may be an acceptable price for the capital protection that gilts are meant to provide in case the euro zone crisis deepens.

ONE OFFS

There is a risk that gilt prices are more inflated than other safe-haven assets due to UK-specific one-off sources of demand, said David Miller, a partner at Cheviot Asset Management, which controls around 3.5 billion pounds of funds.

One source of demand has been UK banks seeking to meet regulatory requirements to boost capital - a source which may soon dry up.

The Bank of England's 125 billion pound purchase of gilts between October and the start of May under its quantitative easing program is another. It now owns more than a quarter of the market.

These gilts do not look likely to be sold any time soon, but it is hard for investors to know how much will be bought in future and/or when stimulus tasks will be turned off, making gilts riskier than say U.S. Treasuries.

And taking into account the higher inflation in Britain than in Germany or the United States some investors such as French fund Carmignac Gestion see no attraction in gilts at all.

"The UK is running a first-class act. They are stealing 2 percent a year from investors," said the fund's chairman Edouard Carmignac, who manages 50 billion euros - none of it in gilts.

Flood Insurance Program May Yet Happen! | Hauswirth & Sons ...

It appears some back room haggling is going on in the US Senate with the National Flood Insurance Program, which is set to expire next week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid does not want anyone messing around with a Food and Drug Administration Bill that the Senate is working on this week. So, Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, who is leading the fight for flood insurance reform, has agreed not to put the flood issue onto Senator Reid?s FDA bill if the Senate takes up the discussion of flood insurance during June.

I think we can look to see the National Flood Insurance Program being extended, yet again, for a 30 to 60 day extension so there will be no lapse in the program.

Home sales and mortgage financing will come to a grinding halt if the program is allowed to expire.

Not the smartest thing to do with this temperamental real estate market, let alone the state of the hurricane season.

Playsurface touchscreen computing table hands-on (video)

Image

Let's be honest -- the first time we saw the Microsoft Surface in action, we all dreamt of getting our grubby fingers on our very own unit. Five years later, we're no closer to the dream of a touchscreen coffee tablet in every living room. Templeman Automation, thankfully, shares that dream. Earlier this month, we caught word of the company's Playsurface, a Kickstarter project aimed at bringing low cost touchscreen computing to the tabletops of eager early adopters who just can't quite justify the $8,000 price tag on Microsoft's similarly named product.

We were excited at the prospect of finally getting to play with the product when TechCrunch opened up the gates to the hardware portion of its Disrupt conference. Unfortunately, as we quickly found out, things wouldn't be quite so easy -- the show was held at Pier 94, a space with overabundant natural light courtesy of rows and rows of skylights. As it turns out, the sun doesn't play too well with the infrared light that helps power Playsurface's touchscreen functionality. The table's creators were nice enough to pop by our offices to let us take the living room gadget for a test drive.

Expiring Tax Cuts, Spending Cuts Could Mean Recession - Finance ...

The U.S. economy could be thrown into another recession if the Bush-era tax cuts expire or if a series of automatic spending cuts take place, according to a new government study.

The Congressional Budget Office report revealed that the economy would shrink by 1.3 percent in the first half of next year if the government lets a series of Bush-era tax cuts expire and automatic budget cuts kick in.

"Under current law, increases in taxes and, to a lesser extent, reductions in spending will reduce the federal budget deficit dramatically between 2012 and 2013 -- a development that some observers have referred to as a "fiscal cliff" -- and will dampen economic growth in the short term," said the report.

The CBO said the threat of recession comes in if tax bills go up quickly for all Americans.

President Obama wants to eliminate the Bush-era tax cuts for individuals who make more than $200,000 a year. Republicans want to make all the tax cuts permanent.

The Difference Between An Email Copywriter and an SEO Copywriter

Copywriting was once a very coveted skill. Writers would hone their skills for years to develop the right mix of storytelling and emotion grabbing writing that sells a product.

However, after the Internet grew, developed, and became a medium for commerce, the need for copywriters grew. This brought a variety of other professionals to the craft ? including online editors, content marketers, and audience development professionals.

For the online business professionals who have been given the copywriting hat to wear, here are a few things to understand about copywriting.

Discover how to write for successful email marketing campaigns when you download our FREE Email Copywriting Basics white paper.

First, email copywriting and SEO copywriting are equally important online, yet they are slightly different than one another. Both begin with creating persuasive content that calls readers to action, yet has a flow that provides a good read.

One main difference between SEO copywriters and email copywriters is that SEO copywriters need to optimize their website copy for targeted keyword phrases. Email copywriters need to develop content that meets the requirements of email service providers and spam filters. This includes creating email subject lines that are interesting and engaging enough to persuade the recipient to open it. They also need to avoid using specific words that will cause the email to trigger a spam filter and not make it to the inbox. Email copywriters laying out snippet-based email newsletters also need to pick body copy that gets people to click links and visit the website.

Are you new to email copywriting or SEO copywriting? Please share your experience on developing your skills.

NGS 2012: Recap - MyHeritage.com - English blog

16????May 20120 comments

MyHeritage Team with Dennis Brimhall CEO of FamilySearch

Last week, the MyHeritage team was kept very busy in a whirlwind of work, learning and fun at very well attended National Genealogical Society's 2012 conference in Cincinnati, Ohio.

On Wednesday, the team was busy at the booth answering questions and providing more information to attendees who had heard about MyHeritage from speakers who spoke about our very social family trees, WorldVitalRecords.com data, facial recognition technology and much more.

In the evening, Daniel Horowitz and Mark Olsen joined hundreds of conference-goers at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for a moving experience as they learned about the lives of thousands of freedom seekers and ?conductors? (those of all races and backgrounds who assisted the enslaved to reach the Ohio River and beyond ? freedom ? at their own and their families' risk). Although not an actual railroad, nor underground, it was the secret route used to transfer the slaves from one location to another ? from one farm or home to the next ? until he or she reached freedom.

Many moving scenes are portrayed. If you visit Cincinnati, the museum should be on your must-see list.

Thursday was another fabulous day full of hundreds of great interactions with customers at the booth and conference goers looking to soak in as much information as they could through classes and interactions with other genealogists and vendors.

On Friday NGS organizers announced that the official NGS attendance was 2,155, resulting in packed session rooms. Many sessions reached capacity, and fire codes are very strict. There were reports of some attendees who could not get a seat in the session they wanted to attend. Technology and census sessions seem to be drawing the largest crowds.

Friday continued to be a great day at NGS.? Mark was able to attend several very informative sessions.? The most informative being a great discussion on properly using the US Census for research by Jill Crandell of the Brigham Young University Center for Family History and Genealogy.? The center sends interns around the globe to gather immigrant records?and other data to document the path from old world to new and help provide clues allowing many to ?bridge the gap?. Jill discussed the many hidden pieces of information that can be found in the census when using the appropriate search strategies.

Friday was consistently very busy in the exhibit hall.? There were many times that people were lined up to ask questions and learn more about MyHeritage and its products and services.

Saturday was another great day at the conference with classrooms continuing to be nearly full or beyond. ?The conference wrapped up as it started with over 2,100 in attendance in full classroom and between classes wandering the rows of exhibits looking for a great deal, answers to genealogy or technical issues and a continued excitement about the ever growing world of genealogy and all its possibilities.

Overall NGS was an excellent conference.? We have much more information and photos to share including a one of a kind visit with a well-known genealogy blogger.? Over the next few weeks we will dive in and post more about NGS and all that occurred during the fabulous week in Cincinnati, Ohio ? Gateway to the Western Frontier.

China sentences fugitive smuggler Lai to life term

BEIJING (AP) ? The man once considered China's most-wanted fugitive was sentenced to life in prison for smuggling and bribery in a lurid corruption case that reached into the highest echelons of the Communist Party and involved a decade-long extradition fight.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that Lai Changxing was convicted and sentenced Friday morning by the Intermediate People's Court in Xiamen, the port city which was his base. On top of the life sentence for smuggling and a concurrent 15-year sentence for bribery, the court ordered all of Lai's personal property seized, Xinhua said.

The sentencing marked an end for what a decade ago had been one of China's biggest political scandals. From Xiamen and through his company the Yuanhua Group, Lai ran an extensive smuggling network, using the amassed fortune to cultivate powerful political protectors. Tainted in the scandal were a deputy police minister, who was later given a suspended death sentence, and the one-time provincial party secretary who was politically untouched and became a member of the party's ruling Politburo.

Lai's network smuggled everything from cigarettes and cars to oil and textiles. The court's verdict said the operation totaled $3.3 billion, evaded $1.7 billion in duties and other taxes and bribed 64 officials between 1996 and 1999, Xinhua reported.

The main office of the Xiamen court referred calls to its publicity department where the telephone rang unanswered.

After a broad corruption and anti-smuggling investigation unmasked Lai's operation, he managed to flee the country, tipped off by local officials, and eventually reached Canada in 1999. He then became the focus of a 12-year extradition battle ? with Chinese leaders often worried that Lai might implicate senior officials in public comments ? until he was deported last year.

In the heyday of his power, Lai lived a life of luxury in China complete with a bulletproof Mercedes Benz. He is alleged to have run a mansion in which he plied officials with liquor and prostitutes.

At one point, state TV splashed pictures of the network's allegedly ill-gotten gains: a tiger skin rug laid out on a conference table, confiscated cars belonging to corrupt bureaucrats, a sack of gold rings, and a picture of a young woman, said to be a lover kept for one official by Lai.

Scores of officials and executives involved have been imprisoned and at least two executed over the scandal. Aside from the deputy police minister, 10 others, from Xiamen's deputy mayor to the city's customs chief were given life sentences or had their death sentences commuted to life.

Also ensnared in the scandal was the wife of Jia Qinglin, the Fujian province party secretary until 1996 and then the party chief of Beijing and an ally of Chinese President Jiang Zemin. Politically connected Chinese said Jiang protected Jia, ordering investigators to curtail the probe.

After Lai fled to Canada, Jiang sent a diplomatic note in 2001 to then Prime Minister Jean Chretien, assuring Canadian authorities Lai would not be executed if returned ? a key Canadian demand.

Still, Lai fought extradition until July when a federal court in Vancouver ruled Lai should not be considered a refugee and upheld his deportation.

The Importance of Having Effective Speaking Skills

Nowadays, effective speaking has received a lot of attention from the general public. Not that it is something that people despise, but it is one of the prominent qualities that can help you to get the attention of other people. Naturally, we all are a great fan of such effective speaking skill. Why? Well simply to say, just think about the last time you watched the President of the US giving a speech on the TV. If you have the stop or pause live TV show service that most service providers like CableTV provide, you can easily pause and analyze how the President speaks.

The tone, the language, body movement just exuberates the confidence and the skills of effective speaking. To an extent, some people must have even said to you that the President is an excellent orator. This effective speaking skill is not only useful in the political settings, but there are situations where we can use them.

It is an asset as it helps in initiative any activity whether it is a project or business and even to the extent of changes. People who have such skills can be termed as the situation changers, as with this skill they are really change a complex and threatening situation into an easy-going one.

There is a constant misconception that good writers are basically good speakers. Well, thinking about it; there is no wrong in thinking that writers are great speakers. After all, there are the people who can clearly explain complex topics in a way that everyone can easily understand. It is somewhat like a gift that one can easily transfer to speaking. But in reality it is not true. There is a huge difference in the way writers write and speak. Seriously, writing and speaking are different things and people who are good at speaking cannot be always good in writing and vice versa.

Also there are people who think that effective speaking is nothing but standing up and talking in a clear voice. Well that is what most of us think. But it is not like that. The art of effective speaking involves various steps like preparation, listening, managing the time, observing, establishing the control of the voice, voice modulation and volume, and the list goes on and on. All these things are done side by side while juggling the microphone, slide clicker and laser point. Besides all these things you need to appear relaxed and enjoying yourself. A tough task isn't?

Actually each of these skills requires practice and experience. Also we do need to learn the do and don'ts of effective speaking. Always whenever you are speaking to the crowd don't always look at the front row and also try not to block the slide or the presentation with your body. It is also important to avoid speaking quietly, fast or too slow. Try not to get off the schedule and always pay due importance to the questions that are hurdled to you.

Something you need to realize is that speaking is quite important and special from another standpoint. Your content is very important and it has to be communicated to others. That is why the audience are there. So you need to give a lot of importance to your style than the words that you choose. If you have been a part of any meeting or discussion, you must have seen speakers frowning when they speak or do the presentation. They feel that presentations are worst and the boring aspect of the speaking technique. One thing what you really need to know is that effective speakers must use the presentation to expand and enhance the message rather that not drive it.

Effective speaking is a skill that each person should have. If you are a person who wants to climb the corporate ladder and reach new heights, this skill will surely help you.

Tax Debt Relief ? What Are The Options That You Can Have?

by moneysma on May 16, 2012

The below post is a guest post from Ryan over at Debt Consolidation Care . I am always open to guest posts, so feel free to contact me regarding what I am looking for. Thanks!

In case you have not made the on-time tax payments and quite a lot of time have lapsed in between you are supposed to be in tax debt. But, if you fail to pay the taxes there can be some serious consequences that you may have to face. So, if you are in tax debt, you will have to try out every option that can actually help you pay down the tax debts. There are various tax debt relief options that can help you become debt free and thus stress free too. If you fail to pay off the IRS tax debt, the assets that you have may also get seized by the IRS.

Tax debt ? The different relief options

There are various kinds of tax debt relief options that can help you pay off your tax debts. These debt relief plans have been designed based on your affordability or keeping in mind the financial situations that the debtors do face. There are mainly two debt relief options through which you may be able to pay off the tax debts. These are the:

  1. Tax debt settlement options and
  2. Installment agreement options

These two have again different branches or rather options that help you pay off the debts. You can choose one depending on your financial problem and tax debt situation.

The options that you can have under the tax debt settlement option are the likes of:

  1. Compromise offer
  2. Penalty reprieve
  3. Taking professional help
  4. IRS tax bankruptcy

The different options that you can take advantage of under the installment agreement options are:

  1. Streamlined installment agreement ? In case of the streamlined installment agreement, you are not required to fill out any form like that of the Form 433-F; which in general the IRS requires so that they can analyze the financial situation you are in. However, so that you can pay back the IRS tax debt through a streamlined installment agreement, the amount which you owe is not supposed to be more than 25,000 USD. In addition, it is also required of you to make an agreement that can help you pay off debts owed within 60-months.
  1. Guaranteed installment agreement ? It is quite a suitable tax debt solution option if you owe less than 10,000 USD in tax debt to the IRS. However, in order to qualify for this payment option, you will be required to agree that you are going to file and also pay the taxes within the right time in the coming tax years. Again, if you already have had another installment agreement in the last 5 years, the IRS may not allow it.
  1. Partial payment installment agreement ? This is considered to be a suitable tax debt relief option if you don?t even have the ability to make the minimum payments under any of the other installment agreements. In this agreement, you are required to make the monthly payment based on your affordability.

So, here are some of the options discussed with regards to the different tax debt relief options that you can benefit from.

Actor, comedian and two-time Video Music Awards emcee Russell Brand will be your host for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards when they air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The star of the upcoming film "Rock of Ages" will lead the fan-voted awards, which celebrate the year's biggest films.

"This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than 'The Avengers' and you won't have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out," said Russell Brand.

"MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life."

Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer for the show, spoke with MTV News about Brand and why he was a clear choice as host. "First of all, I think Russell's the perfect host for this show," said Ignjatovic, who previously worked with Brand during his two stints hosting the VMAs. "He's a movie star. He's probably one of the most brilliant stand-ups that I've seen in his time, and he's a rock star."

And it's that rock-and-roll attitude that Ignjatovic said will play an important role in this year's show, which will highlight the ties between music and film with performances from groups like Fun.

Ignjatovic added that Brand's ability to riff off the unscripted moments in the show really excites him. "Whatever we end up creating around him within the show, he brings that danger thing as well," Ignjatovic said. "We'd love for the show to live there, where you don't know how he's going to react to something in the moment. He's so sharp and witty and on his game that that's an exciting place to live."

But when it really comes down to it, what makes Brand the right host, according to Ignjatovic, is his comedy.

"He has amazing comedic chops. He's brilliant. He touches all of the areas that I think are important to us," he said. "Add to that I think he's one of the most professional people I've worked with in terms of comedians. He's well-studied and very dedicated to his craft. I think we're very fortunate that he said 'yes.' "

Why does Norway's Breivik invoke the Knights Templar? (+video)

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a twin terror attack in Norway last July, claims to be a member of a reborn 'Knights Templar.' What's the symbolism?

One of the highlights of today's testimony in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of the murder of 77 people during a bombing and shooting rampage in Norway, was the prosecutor's efforts to challenge Mr. Breivik's purported membership in the "Knights Templar."

Skip to next paragraph A sociologist for the defense talks about Andrew Breivik's world view.

Breivik claims to have helped "refound" the ancient military order as a force to fight immigration and multiculturalism in Europe. But why turn to a long-gone Christian order to symbolize his agenda today?

The Knights Templar, or "Templars," were a Christian order founded in the 10th century. Named for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Templars initially protected pilgrims traveling through the Holy Lands, but eventually evolved into a powerful military force that waged war against the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Templars became so powerful, however, that European leaders grew to distrust the order. Early in the 1300s, King Philip IV of France launched a crackdown on the Templars that, with the help of Pope Clement V, eventually spread Europe-wide, destroying the order. Many members were tortured and tried for heresy by the Catholic Church.

But despite, or perhaps because of, their ancient history and sudden demise, the Templars still hold a solid grip on modern imaginations and pop culture. They are frequently depicted as the mysterious controllers of the world in books like Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" and movies like "National Treasure." "The Da Vinci Code" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" set the Templars up as secret keepers of the Holy Grail. They even appear as the enemies in video games like "Assassin's Creed."

Certainly, the organization that Breivik claims to be a member of is equally mysterious. Breivik describes the organization as "a leaderless network, made to be self-driven cells.? He said that ?For militants, [Knights Templar] is meant to be a version of Al Qaeda." He has yet to name another member of the group, claiming that to do so would risk their being caught, though he has indicated that his "English mentor" can be found in London and that a Serb "war hero" living in Liberia is among the group's ranks.

Whether or not the Templars in which Breivik claims membership are real, the name is likely meant to evoke both the mysterious nature of the original Templars and their open war against Muslim forces during the Crusades. The historical Templars' modern reputation and supposed influence makes a strong symbolic counterpoint to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda.

Monitor guest blogger James Bosworth suggested that the use of the name may also be meant to legitimize the group as a moral one.

Last July, Mr. Bosworth noted that Breivik was not the first violent criminal to invoke the Templars: A Mexican criminal gang has also adopted the name and some of the associated symbolism. But Bosworth concludes that "The Mexican Knights Templar code of conduct appears to be a false appeal to Mexico's citizens," something that could also be argued of Breivik's use of the Templar mythology. "The Knights Templar label is a failed attempt to grant historical legitimacy to a violent act that truly has no justification," Bosworth wrote.

100% This Is Not a Film

This is as a fascinating bit of minimalism as there has been in quite a long time, not only for its insights into the state of censorship in Iran(from what I can infer, Jafar Panahi's arrest sounds like something out of "Hawaii 5-0,") but for its symbolism in capturing a day in the life of Jafar Panahi, trapped inside waiting for loved ones to return on New Year's Day with fireworks going off just outside. So it may come as no surprise that the only identifiable movie on his DVD rack is "Buried" starring Ryan Reynolds. In all honesty, I don't think 'This is Not a Film' was really meant to be a title in a conventional sense. Rather, it is meant to possibly to work around the Iranian authorities' sentencing Panahi to six years of prison and 20 years without directing, writing a film or giving interviews.(His lawyer thinks there is a chance he could have the prohibitions thrown out and his sentence reduced but he is still going to jail.) All of which he bares up under with humor and fatalism. So, that only leaves him to talk about his old films in pointing out how little control he has had over his amateur casts in the past. To accentuate this, his pet iguana(which is bigger than most cars, by the way) takes center stage at times. So, he stages scenes from what would have been his latest film about a young woman who wants to attend university in Tehran over her traditional parents' wishes. This all comes about when Mojtaba Mirtahmasb conceives of a behind the scenes series on banned directors.(Another way of looking at it, is as they put it, when hairdressers get bored, they do each others' hair.) Even though Panahi does not want to appeal to other Iranian directions which might get them in trouble also, Mirtahmasb also is currently in hot water, too. And finally, the real reason for this being made, is as Panahi puts it, to petition for international pressure, or in other words, us.
