Russell Bishop: Soul-Talk: What Can You Do With All That Upset?

How much upset have you experienced in your life so far? How much more upset would you like to endure going forward? Bizarre questions, perhaps, and yet if you are willing to dig into them a bit, you might be able to dig out from under all that hurt and upset in your life.

Undoubtedly, you have experienced all manner of upsets in your life, some that came seemingly out of nowhere, and some that have been of your own making. It's this last statement that some will find even more upsetting, while others will find it liberating. If it's upset you seek, you need read no further, for upset has already been won. As much as you may find it apparently useful to blame me or someone else for your upset, the truth of the matter is that you are the one who authors your own upset.

From Upset to Liberation

If you're not already completely pissed off, let's dig into this notion of how you author your own upset and see if you can discover some keys to your own liberation.

If you're already pissed off, did you start your day off that way before you even began reading this article? Is pissed off your basic stance in life? If so, I actually do understand -- I've spent much of my life angry and upset, blaming circumstances and other people for the things I didn't like in life. Truth be told, there's lots to be pissed off about out there. The only problem with living life through pissed-off eyes is that the only thing you win by remaining upset is the opportunity to be even more upset. Perhaps you've noticed.

If you really want to experience what this is like, just bring to mind something that really pisses you off about another person. Simply dwell on that behavior, attitude or way of being of the other person for a moment and see if you just don't wind up being even more pissed off than you were even five minutes ago. If you're "successful" at getting even more upset, then you may have noticed that the only person who got you upset right now is your own self. Sure, you can blame me for bringing up the subject in the first place, and if that makes you any happier, go right ahead and blame me.

However, blaming me, or anyone else for that matter, is beyond a slippery slope. The more you focus on your object of blame, the more upset you are likely to find yourself. Let's be clear, here: Take a look around wherever you happen to find yourself right now. Am I there? Is the other person there? I didn't think so. The one person who is present, however, is you.

Actually, there are at least two of you present -- your Self-Talk and your Soul-Talk. Your Self-Talk is the one that will keep bringing up even more reasons for you to be upset, and the more reasons you give yourself, the more upset you will become. If you have been following this series on moving from Self-Talk to Soul-Talk, then you will recognize that your Self-Talk is primarily negative and builds on limiting self-images you most likely learned growing up.

The more riled up you manage to get, the more power you are handing over to your Self-Talk. Talk about a vicious circle! What makes this circle ever more vicious is that you can literally turn a mole hill into a mountain by what you tell yourself and wind up actually believing that the other person did this to you.

One Self-Talk limitation most of us learned in massive doses is "I'm upset because..." and then you get to fill in the blank. "I'm upset because..." is a master stroke in blame, a true key in how to live a life filled with hurt and upset.

I doubt seriously that any of you spent late night hours recently plotting for your next upset, or planning your next set of hurt feelings. However, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that at least some of you reading this article did spend some serious time reviewing how upset you are with your boss, husband, wife, kids, next door neighbor, politician or any other object of your upset. If you have, then surely you must recognize that the more time you dwell on what the other person did or said, what they didn't do or didn't say, the more upset you can become.

If you can recognize this simple little fact, then perhaps you can at least own something along the following lines: The more time you spend dwelling on your upset, the more upset you become. "So what?" you might ask. Well, there's a really big "so what" here: Even if the other person did do something unkind, mean-spirited or downright nasty, you're the one adding insult to your own injury. Long after the other person has left, you're the one who insists on dwelling in the negative feelings. You're the one who is adding to your own upset.

Was It Me or Someone Else?

Toward the middle of 2011, I lost one of my key clients, which had a material impact on my work and income. The reason they gave for not continuing turned out to be the very reason they hired me in the first place! The company was trying to grow its book of business and in order to do so needed to add some capability not already in place. Just as we were starting to make some progress in building that capability, the CEO turned his attention to another of his "bright, shiny objects," a patter of distraction that had put the company in the predicament for which I was hired in the first place.

At first, I was thoroughly upset, running the scenario over and over again in my mind, reminding myself how completely stupid this decision was. As I was stewed in my own juices, lamenting the turn of events, one of my mentors and coaches asked me, "When are you going to stop being surprised?" When I asked what the heck she was talking about, she reminded me that I had not been all that thrilled with the direction of this client work in the first place. She then asked me to consider what my Soul-Talk might prefer. I wound up recognizing a deeper level of working with people that I truly wanted but had not been willing to risk going for. From there, I was able to let go of my true source of upset (undermining my own self), and began focusing on that more deeply satisfying and meaningful work.

What makes this all the more interesting is that as I began to take positive steps toward aligning my actions with my "seemingly-impossible good," the very client that had dropped me, came back asking if we could re-engage the conversation but at a deeper level.

That's where true positive thinking comes into play: Once you choose a positive experience that you would like to experience more of, you can then ask of yourself, "What can I do, right now, to begin bringing that 'seemingly-impossible good' into my life?" As I mentioned last week, you probably won't go from zero to hero in one simple miraculous step, but you may put yourself on the path and wind up discovering a whole series of micro steps that will begin leading you into the improved experience of life you truly seek.

How have you let your own upset interfere with your "seemingly-impossible good?" How have you been able to turn things around and begin making at least some positive progress?

I'd love to hear from you. What has been our experience with taking this kind of approach to your life? Please do leave a comment here or drop me an email at Russell (at) russellbishop.com.

Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology

Bethesda, MD The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has released its annual report to Congress, Federal Funding for Biomedical & Related Life Sciences Research, FY 2013. "As a result of exciting new discoveries, we are poised to accelerate our progress in the search for cures, and it would be tragic if we could not capitalize on the many opportunities before us." said Joseph C. LaManna, PhD, FASEB President. "As other nations ramp up their investments in R&D, it would be very costly to cede our leadership in critical areas of science and technology. We recognize that these are difficult economic times. Nonetheless, it remains abundantly clear that research-based innovation has dramatically improved the quality of life for billions of people, and that our best hope for future progress remains a strong commitment to science and technology."

Below are the recommendations for the five agencies described in the report.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
FASEB recommends an appropriation of at least $32 billion for NIH in FY 2013 as the first step of a program of sustained growth that will keep pace with the increasing scientific opportunities and the demonstrated capacity of the research enterprise.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
FASEB recommends a minimum funding level of $7.3 billion for the National Science Foundation in FY 2013 to prevent contraction.

Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science
To promote sustainable growth, FASEB recommends a funding level of $5.1 billion for the Department of Energy's Office of Science in FY 2013.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
FASEB recommends funding the Veterans Administration Medical and Prosthetic Research Program at $621 million in FY 2013.

Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agriculture and Food Research Initiative
FASEB recommends $277 million for AFRI in FY 2013.

The report outlines FASEB's research funding goals for the next fiscal year and will be sent to members of Congress and senior officials in the Obama administration. A copy of the report is available online here: http://www.faseb.org/Portals/0/PDFs/opa/1.30.12%20Fed%20Funding%20Report%20press%20release%20FINAL.pdf

Despair, crackdowns breed more violence in Tibet (AP)

BEIJING ? A young man posts his photo with a leaflet demanding freedom for Tibet and telling Chinese police, come and get me. Protesters rise up to defend him, and demonstrations break out in two other Tibetan areas of western China to support the same cause.

Each time, police respond with bullets.

The three clashes, all in the past week, killed several Tibetans and injured dozens. They mark an escalation of a protest movement that for months expressed itself mainly through scattered individual self-immolations.

It's the result of growing desperation among Tibetans and a harsh crackdown by security forces that scholars and pro-Tibet activists contend only breeds more rage and despair.

That leaves authorities with the stark choice of either cracking down even harder or meeting Tibetan demands for greater freedom and a return of their Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama ? something Beijing has shown zero willingness to do.

"By not responding constructively when it was faced with peaceful one-person protests, the (Communist) party has created the conditions for violent, large-scale protests," said Robbie Barnett, head of modern Tibetan studies at New York's Columbia University.

This is the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital Lhasa spread to Tibetan areas in adjoining provinces. China responded by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year. Special permission is still required for non-Chinese visitors to Tibet, and the Himalayan region remains closed off entirely for the weeks surrounding the March 14 anniversary of the riots that left 22 people dead.

Video smuggled out by activists shows paramilitary troops equipped with assault rifles and armored cars making pre-dawn arrests. Huge convoys of heavily armored troops are seen driving along mountain roads and monks accused of sedition being frog-marched to waiting trucks.

For the past year, self-immolations have become a striking form of protest in the region. At least 16 monks, nuns and former clergy set themselves on fire after chanting for Tibetan freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

China, fiercely critical of the Dalai Lama, says Tibet has been under its rule for centuries, but many Tibetans say the region was functionally independent for most of that time.

In a change from the individual protests, several thousand Tibetans marched to government offices Monday in Ganzi prefecture in Sichuan province. Police opened fire into the crowd, killing up to three people, witnesses and activist groups said.

On Tuesday, security forces opened fire on a crowd of protesters in another area of Ganzi, killing two Tibetans and wounding several more, according to the group Free Tibet.

On Thursday in southwestern Sichuan province's Aba prefecture, a youth named Tarpa posted a leaflet saying that self-immolations wouldn't stop until Tibet is free, the London-based International Campaign for Tibet said. He wrote his name on the leaflet and included a photo of himself, saying that Chinese authorities could come and arrest him if they wished, group spokeswoman Kate Saunders said in an email.

Security forces did so about two hours later. Area residents blocked their way, shouting slogans and warning of bigger protests if Tarpa wasn't released, Saunders said. Police then fired into the crowd, killing a a 20-year-old friend of Tarpa's, a student named Urgen, and wounding several others.

The incident, as with most reported clashes in Tibetan areas, could not be independently verified and exact numbers of casualties were unclear because of the heavy security presence and lack of access. The topic is so sensitive that even government-backed scholars claim ignorance of it and refuse to comment.

The government, however, acknowledged Tuesday's unrest, saying that a "mob" charged a police station and injured 14 officers, forcing police to open fire on them. The official Xinhua News Agency said police killed one rioter and injured another.

"The Chinese government will, as always, fight all crimes and be resolute in maintaining social order," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in comments on the incident.

The harsh response points to a deep anxiety about the self-immolations, said Youdon Aukatsang, a New Delhi-based member of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile.

"They're worried that there is an underground movement in Tibet that is coming to the surface," she said.

Tibetan desperation has been fed both by the harsh crackdown ? security agents reportedly outnumber monks in some monasteries ? along with a deep fear that the Dalai Lama, probably the most potent symbol of Tibet's separate identity, will never return.

The 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate handed his political powers to an elected assembly last year. That was intended to ensure the Tibetan cause would live on after him, but was met with considerable anxiety among many Tibetans who saw it as a sign he was giving up his role as leader of their struggle.

Dibyesh Anand, a Tibet expert at London's University of Westminster, said resistance to Chinese rule is likely to grow more fierce.

"Protests will get more radicalized since the Tibetans in the region see no concession, no offer of compromise, no flexibility coming from the government," he said.

U.S. News - School suspends cancer-survivor boy for growing hair ...

Lathan Goumas / Flint Journal via AP

J.T. Gaskins was suspended from school for violating the school's dress code policy because his hair is too long.

By msnbc.com staff

A few inches of hair stand between J.T. Gaskins and an education.

The 17-year-old, who had been treated for cancer and said he now wants to grow his hair to give to?Locks of Love --?a charity that provides wigs for kids who lose their hair due to chemotherapy and other treatments?--?was recently suspended from Madison Academy, a? charter school in Burton, Mich., for refusing to trim his tresses.

Gaskins told The Flint Journal that he was diagnosed with leukemia as an infant and has been cancer-free since age 7. ?This is something I want to do, and I feel very strongly about it.?

The school?s dress code policy, spelled out in the student-parent handbook, says hair must bair must? be kept ?clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes? for boys.

Gaskins? hair, which resembles the windswept bangs of Justin Bieber, dangles at his eyes and covers his ears.

His mother, Christa Plante, told?the Journal she supports her son and remembers his cancer fight as a small child. ?The fact that he?s ready to talk about everything he went through, his strength ... I can?t deny him that. He?s ready to speak out about what he?s been through,? Plante said, according to the newspaper.

Plante started an online petition asking the school board to amend the hair policy for boys. As of Friday, more than 160 people had signed on.??

"Female students can grow and donate their hair, yet boys cannot," the petition says. "... we are simply asking for compromise and to allow not only my son, but anyone wanting to donate to be allowed to do so, to allow the boys the same rights and freedoms as the girl students."

Board meeting
Superintendent Will Kneer says school officials have been trying to work out a solution. He says the five-member school board may soon take up a possible revision to the dress-code policy to take into account special situations like Locks of Love.

?The board is charged with the responsibility of assembling a group of policies and procedures that most uphold the vision and mission of the school and serve the school best as a whole and the community as a whole,??Kneer told msnbc.com on Friday.

Friday was the fourth straight day of classes Gaskins has missed. Kneer says school officials are trying to find ways to provide for?his continuing education while he remains out of class.

?My immediate concern is, what are we going to do for this kid to make sure he doesn?t lapse,? Kneer said.

"Personally, my heartfelt desire at this moment is to have that child back in school."

Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said the group was aboard an open-air "safari bus" when the accident occurred on a steep road near the island's scenic Beacon Point. She said it was not yet clear what caused the accident.

The ship had had docked in St. Thomas Friday as part of a seven-night cruise.

Microsoft reportedly working on Kinect-enabled laptops

It remains to be seen when or if they'll turn into actual products, but The Daily reports that Microsoft is at least working on getting its Kinect technology shoved into laptops. While details are light, the iPad-based publication says that it's seen a pair of prototypes that "appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8," but which have had their webcams replaced with an array of sensors that run along the top of the screen (a set of LEDs are said to be at the bottom). The Daily also says that it's confirmed with a source at Microsoft that the devices are indeed official prototypes of a Kinect-enabled laptop, and it unsurprisingly suggests that Microsoft would likely license the technology to laptop manufacturers rather than build its own hardware.

Microsoft reportedly working on Kinect-enabled laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 12:48:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Obama courts Latino vote on economic tour (AP)

BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. ? President Barack Obama is courting Hispanics in politically important states, setting himself up as a champion of the crucial Latino voting bloc and as a foil to Republican candidates fighting for a share of support from the same groups.

With Latino voters voting overwhelmingly Democratic, Obama is not in danger of losing the support of a majority of Hispanics. But he does need their intensity, and a Gallup tracking poll shows that while a majority of Hispanics approve of Obama, that approval is not as high as it is among black voters.

Pitching his economic agenda during a three-day, five-state trip this week, Obama has not ignored the fact that three of the states ? Nevada, Arizona and Colorado ? all have Hispanic populations of 20 percent or more. A majority of them are Democratic, but they also could be a factor in upcoming nominating contests in those states. Nevada and Colorado hold caucuses within two weeks and Arizona has a primary Feb. 28.

In Arizona Wednesday, where he was drawing attention to his efforts to increase manufacturing, Obama playfully interacted with a supporter who shouted out: "Barack es mi hermano! (Barack is my brother!)"

"Mi hermano ? mucho gusto (My brother, a real pleasure)," Obama shouted back.

And it was no accident that he scheduled an interview with Univision, the Spanish language network that reaches a broad swath of the U.S. Latino population, while he was in Arizona and with local Telemundo affiliates Thursday in Las Vegas and in Denver. All that while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the rest of the Republican presidential field were battling in Florida, another state with a key Latino voting bloc.

"It's an important community in this country and he will continue to have those interactions," White House spokesman Jay Carney said of Obama's efforts to reach out to Spanish language media.

No issue reverberates more in the appeal to Latinos than immigration.

For Obama, it reared up suddenly for him Wednesday when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican who signed one of the toughest laws to curtail illegal immigration, greeted him at the airport tarmac in Mesa, Ariz., with a handwritten invitation for the president to join her in a visit to the Mexican border.

Obama replied coolly, noting that he did not appreciate the way she had depicted him in a book she published last year, "Scorpions for Breakfast." In the book, Brewer writes that Obama was condescending and lectured her during a meeting at the White House to discuss immigration. "He was a little disturbed about my book," Brewer told two reporters shortly after the encounter.

Obama continued to promote his economic plan Thursday in Nevada and Colorado, focusing on energy policy and his attempts to expand oil and gas exploration while also emphasizing clean energy.

"Doubling down on a clean energy industry will create lots of jobs in the process," the president said at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado, where the Air Force has installed solar panels and tested jets that run on biofuels.

As such, he was indirectly pitching to Hispanics as well. A new Pew Research Center poll found that 54 percent of Latinos believe that the economic downturn has been harder on them than on other groups in the U.S.

"There is no question that Latinos were hard hit, especially by the bursting of the housing bubble and the resulting steep decline in construction work," Carney said Thursday. "Latinos are overrepresented in the construction industry. It's one of the reasons why, certainly, Latinos would greatly benefit from infrastructure investments that put construction workers back to work."

In 2008, Obama beat Republican John McCain by a 2-1 margin among Hispanics.

To win again, he will need that level of enthusiasm to make up for weaknesses elsewhere in his voter support. In a bright spot for Obama, the Pew poll found that even though Hispanics believe their economic condition is poor, two-thirds of those polled said they expect their financial situation to improve over the next year, whereas 58 percent of the overall population expect the same.

In his interview with Univision, Obama made a point of noting that both Romney and Gingrich have said they would veto legislation, known as the DREAM Act, that would give a pathway to citizenship to children who came to the United States illegally but who attend college or enlist in the military.

"They believe that we should not provide a pathway to citizenship for young people who were brought here when they were very young children and are basically American kids but right now are still in a shadow," Obama said. "They've said that they would veto the DREAM Act. Both of them."

At a debate Monday on NBC, however, both Gingrich and Romney said they would support modified legislation that only applied to young people who joined the military. "I would not support the part that simply says everybody who goes to college is automatically waived for having broken the law," Gingrich said.

Obama, in the interview, explicitly connected the Republican presidential field to congressional Republicans, who suffer from bottom-dwelling approval ratings right now. Asked why he had been unable to deliver on his promise for overhauling the immigration system, Obama replied:

"Well, it's very simple. We couldn't get any Republican votes. Zero. None," he said. "So this is the kind of barrier that we're meeting in Congress. We're just going to keep on pushing and pushing until hopefully we finally get a break."

Potter star looks to life without wands or wizards (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? For Daniel Radcliffe, it's time to forget Harry Potter. The 22-year-old actor, inextricably linked to the boy wizard he played throughout the movie franchise, takes on his first adult role in Victorian-era horror film "The Woman in Black."

Hitting theatres in Britain on February 10 and a week earlier in the United States, the movie is a step into the unknown for an actor who grew up on the set of one of Hollywood's most successful series.

Instead of production budgets of $250 million or more, The Woman in Black cost an estimated $17 million to make. And however big Radcliffe's fan base around the world, another billion-dollar box office looks out of the question.

James Watkins, who directed The Woman In Black, called it a "reinvention" for Radcliffe.

"I think it's the start of that, absolutely," Radcliffe told Reuters in an interview ahead of Tuesday's red carpet world premiere of the new movie.

One of the attractions of playing Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer and father mourning the death of his wife, was the obvious break with what went before.

"People haven't seen me looking like this before. People haven't seen me playing a father -- all those things are going to help separate it in their mind," Radcliffe said.

"But I think ultimately the thing that will help that reinvention is the fact that the story is so good. I think people will very quickly forget that they're watching Harry Potter."

CREEPY MANSION

In The Woman in Black, Kipps is forced to leave his three-year-old son and travel to a remote village on the east coast of England to look into the legal affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House, a creepy mansion cut off from the mainland when the tide rises.

He discovers a dark family secret that helps explain the appearance of a mysterious, ghost-like woman dressed in black who beckons children to an early grave.

The film is based on a novel by Susan Hill that was adapted into a successful West End play, still running in London.

Jane Goldman, who co-wrote the scripts for "Kick-Ass" and "The Debt," was brought in to translate the page to the big screen, and horror specialist Watkins directed.

Radcliffe said he did not think too hard about trying to be different from his Harry Potter character when he worked on the set of The Woman in Black and was pleased with the results.

"I think my work in this is certainly on a par with the work I did on the last Potter which I was very, very proud of."

He will soon discover if critics agree. Throughout the Harry Potter series Radcliffe earned mixed reviews, although any negative comments did nothing to deter record audiences.

And his two main stage roles -- "Equus" in 2007 and "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" in 2011 were generally well-received, particularly Equus.

Looking ahead, Radcliffe said proving he was not a one-part wonder would take time.

"It's a long road. It's not going to be one film and suddenly you're off. It's going to be a combination."

That combination will involve both stage and screen.

"In an ideal world I would like to mix them as much as possible. In March I'm filming a movie called 'Kill Your Darlings' in which I'll be playing a 19-year-old Allen Ginsberg.

"That's the next thing on the plate and after that we'll see."

Gingrich, Romney disagree over debate crowds (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. ? Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Tuesday he doesn't want to continue debating his Republican rivals if the audience isn't allowed to participate. His campaign said later that he would participate in upcoming debates, regardless of the audience rules.

Gingrich, whose rise in the polls and come-from-behind victory in the South Carolina followed well-received debate performances, complained that people were admonished by NBC News anchor and debate moderator Brian Williams not to applaud during Monday night's debate in Tampa. The candidates were to debate Thursday night in Jacksonville, Fla.

"That's wrong," the former House speaker told Fox News. "The media doesn't control free speech. People ought to be allowed to applaud if they want to. It was almost silly."

Disagreeing with his rival, Mitt Romney told reporters that the rules for general-election debates are much stricter and that Gingrich would have to be willing to follow the rules of the Presidential Debate Commission.

"He better learn to debate in all settings," Romney said.

Romney's advisers believe that audience participation drove Gingrich's breakout moments in two debates in South Carolina. They were pleased with the audience reaction during Monday night's debate, calling it more serious than the raucous crowds at the second South Carolina debate.

Gingrich was an audience favorite at the two debates in South Carolina, particularly when he admonished debate moderator John King of CNN for bringing up the subject of ex-wife Marianne Gingrich and her allegation that Gingrich had sought an "open marriage" as he was having an affair with the woman now his wife, Callista. Audience members applauded and cheered Gingrich's criticism of King as well as some of his policy statements.

Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who was the GOP's nominee in 2008, said Tuesday that he thinks debates have had an inordinate influence, and at times a negative one, on the primary campaign. McCain is supporting Romney's bid for the nomination.

"It's very harmful to Republicans because of instead of presenting their views, their policies and their proposals ? it's all gotcha, it's all gotcha," McCain told reporters on Capitol Hill. "And disapproval ratings go up. And people spend an hour or two insulting each other. So I think it's very damaging."

Report: OPEC wants to stay out of Iran-West spat (AP)

CAIRO ? OPEC's acting president said the producer group should stay out of political battles, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported Sunday, an apparent bid by the bloc to steer clear of a potential showdown between Tehran and the U.S. over threats to close the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Karim Elaibi said that while Iran's "enemies" have imposed various sanctions on the Islamic Republic, the 12-nation Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' main focus should be protecting its members' interest and not being dragged into a political struggle over oil.

Elaibi, who is also OPEC's current president, last week said he was going to Tehran to warn against closing the strait, through which about a sixth of the world's crude flows daily. IRNA did not say whether the tension over the waterway was raised during the oil minister's meetings with officials.

Instead, the language reflected the warmer relations between Iran and Iraq since a U.S.-led coalition had ousted former strongman Saddam Hussein in 2003. The Shiite government in Baghdad is seen as increasingly close to Tehran, and Iran is investing heavily in Iraq.

Iran has warned repeatedly it would choke off the strait if sanctions affect its oil sales. The U.S. has enacted, but not yet put into force, sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and, by extension, the country's ability to be paid for its oil. The European Union, a major buyer of Iranian oil, is considering sanctions on Iranian crude.

The tension over the strait and the potential impact it would have not only on global oil supplies, but also the price of crude and the economies of the countries that buy Iranian oil, have weighed heavily on consumers and traders.

Gulf nations have offered assurances that they would step in and provide any additional crude needed by the global market. Iran interpreted the offer as an attempt to undercut it and issued a quick warning to the Gulf Arab producers to not try to offset its exports with their own.

Elaibi's remarks appear to be an attempt to pull the producer bloc out of the political fray, but they also reflect the uneasy balance Iraq faces.

Iraq exports most of its crude through the strait, and any attempt to shut the waterway could be a severe blow to its economy. At the same time, it appears reluctant to come across as being too harsh on its neighbor, in part because of the investments Iran provides and its ideological weight as the region's strongest Shiite government.

His visit to Tehran came just days before Iraq inaugurates a new oil export outlet in the Gulf with a capacity of up to 900,000 barrels a day. It would be the first of five floating facilities that would eventually handle about 5 million barrels a day.

The new outlet will help Iraq, limited now by infrastructure bottlenecks, to export more oil.

'Housewives' 'come out stronger' in season finale

Richard Mclaren / Bravo

The ladies of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" say "so long" to their drama-packed second season.

By Lia Haberman, E! Online

Lisa Vanderpump's daughter, Pandora, wanted to avoid a battle royale at her wedding. And on Monday night she got her wish -- the Beverly Hills nuptials held at the family's mansion were picture perfect.?

Of course, that didn't keep Lisa from freaking out over every little detail. Or the Bravo producers having some fun at the expense of Paul Nassif's dignity.?

You're cordially invited to our recap of the the second season finale of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" ....

RELATED:?Did Kelsey Grammer Really Shoot a Camille Grammer Look-Alike on "30 Rock"?!

Continuing in the show's TMI tradition, Paul got a colonoscopy on TV. (Thank God?Adrienne Maloof drew the line at giving him an enema, or we'd be treated to even more detail.)

We get it, encouraging people to get checked for polyps or cancer is a noble effort, but there was no dignity in watching Paul pass gas in bed, especially since it sounded like the noise had been enhanced in post-production. Um, really, guys, was that necessary?

If Lisa decides to preserve this episode on her DVR, may we suggest deleting the first five minutes. Just saying.

Of course, watching herself run around while wondering why they didn't just have the wedding at the Beverly Hills Hotel may not be worth preserving.?

Chi-chi-chi wedding planner Kevin Lee was MIA until just before the ceremony -- the man does have his own reality series on TLC to attend to. But Lisa probably would have worried regardless. The $9,500 cake needs to be decorated. The flowers aren't right. The transformed tennis court doesn't look intimate enough. Hubby Ken Todd's still writing his speech an hour before the wedding.

"I'm a control freak," admitted Lisa in the understatement of the year.?

At least no one crashed this party. (We're pretty sure La Toya Jackson was meant to be there, right?) And somehow, the family even found the one man in L.A. who doesn't want to be on TV to perform the ceremony. Or maybe he was imported from some place where doctors and priests don't hand out head shots. ?

Luckily for Pandy, it was classiest -- and possibly most expensive -- party thrown this season.?

"It definitely looked like a million dollar wedding," cooed Camille Grammer. "I don't know how much she spent, but Lisa is smart enough to not spend that much money."

She may have a point. Pandy looked gorgeous in her Ian Stuart princess gown, but it only cost $6,000. Remember, this is Bev Hills. That's budget pricing in this zip code!

Three weeks later, Kyle Richards managed to have another drama-free get-together.

The worst has finally happened, Russell Armstrong is dead, and Kyle's worried about Taylor and Kennedy. "Since Russell died the girls have not seen a lot of Taylor. It's time for her to come back to her friends so we can support her."

Kim Richards is not there, of course, but Kyle says it's better this way. "In order for us to get along, I have to not say anything."

The show then provides updates on all the women, though in some cases, a peek at headlines would have been more timely:

  • "Taylor has been trying to keep afloat after the tragedy. Facing financial and legal issues, she's publishing her memoirs."
  • "Camille and her beau are still hot and heavy. Emphasis on the hot." (She's also dealing with her ex and his new wife's pregnancy?and rumors she's being replaced next season.)
  • "Lisa and Ken downsized to a 10,000 square foot home ... and promptly added 2,000 more." (She's also rumored to be in talks for her own spinoff show.)
  • "Adrienne is celebrating her shoe line's success ... and having a new neighbor across the street."
  • "Kim is not pregnant. She checking herself into a drug and alcohol rehab program in December." (She's since been released and is "moving forward.")
  • "Kyle wrote an advice book for women. It includes a chapter on sisterly love."

"Looking back on this year, I see the roller coaster of emotions we've all experienced, and we've found a way to also be supportive of each other and, overall, we've come out stronger as women," says Adrienne, summing up season two.
