Merkel denies misleading public over nuclear dump

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday denied she had lied to the public about the suitability of a permanent location for the country's central nuclear waste dump when she was environment minister in the 1990s.

In a rare five-hour appearance before a parliamentary inquiry, Merkel rebutted allegations that the then government had put political considerations before scientific findings when it decided to focus the search for a waste dump only in Gorleben in northern Germany.

"I deny any and all conjecture, allegations and suspicions that the government at the time did not act properly and legally," the conservative chancellor and chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party told a 16-member parliamentary panel.

While it is unlikely that questions about her performance as a minister in the 1990s will dent her solid popularity ratings one year before the next election, the issue of where Germany will permanently store its nuclear waste has long been politically sensitive.

The opposition Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens accuse her of bowing to political pressure from her party allies at the time and focusing only on Gorleben - the site of a temporary dump - as a permanent nuclear waste site, rather than exploring other possibly more suitable locations.

Specifically, they say that Merkel distorted the results of a scientific study by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources that reported it was worthwhile to explore other sites for a permanent storage site.

Ute Vogt, SPD committee leader, said Merkel had misled the public about the results of the study by saying it considered Gorleben, in a sparsely populated northern region far away from conservative voter strength in southern Germany, to be the most appropriate location when it in fact did not say that at all.

"In my view you were deliberately dishonest about the results of the study in order to keep everything calm politically in your camp," said Vogt.

Merkel, 58, denied she had misled the public. But she acknowledged her comments in 1995 were not as precise as now.

She drew laughter in the crowded chamber when she responded with an ironic smile to a pointed question from Vogt about why her 1995 statements differed from what she said on Thursday: "Because I wasn't as perfect back then as I am now."

Vogt shot back: "Why don't you just tell us the truth? You don't have to be perfect. Just honest."

The parliamentary inquiry was launched in 2010 and has already become one of the most expensive investigations in German history.

Germany, which last year announced plants to shut down all its nuclear power plants in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, still does not have a permanent waste dump even though Gorleben has been its intermediary repository since 1977.

Miami Leads US Property Market Recovery

The tide is finally turning in the U.S. real estate market and the charge is being led by increased prices and sales in Miami. The city got a head start by drawing attention from foreign investors early on and the attention has not waned despite rising prices. The Miami Association of Realtors report that prices were up again in August, making it the ninth consecutive month of gains. A shortage of homes for sale is helping to drive prices up faster and higher than in other areas of the country, but it doesn?t seem to bother investors who are still finding deals on properties in the Floridian hotspot. For more on this continue reading the following article from Property Wire.

Miami, which is considered as leading the property revival in the US, saw home prices rise again in August, the latest figures from the Miami Association of Realtors show. It is the ninth consecutive month of appreciation with buyers from overseas in particular fuelling the growth of the real estate market.

The median sales price of Miami-Dade condominiums increased 28.4% to $146,500 compared to a year earlier, with prices having now increased for each of the last 14 months. The median sales price of single family homes rose 10.8% to $195,000. Despite the shortage of housing inventory, Miami home sales remain strong and continue to drive significant price appreciation, according to Miami Association of Realtors chairman Martha Pomares.

There is evident demand for Miami properties, particularly from foreign buyers and investors who recognize Miami?s desirability and profitability. Miami remains the top market for foreign buyers in the nation, and local international activity continues to grow, she said.

In August the average sales price for condominiums in Miami-Dade County increased 20.9% to $283,497. The average sales prices for single family homes increased 28.4 percent to $408,810. Statewide median sales prices in August increased 5.8% to $147,000 for single family homes and 13.2% to $102,980 for condominiums, according to data from the Florida Realtors Industry.

Total residential sales in Miami-Dade County increased 7% compared to a year earlier, compared to record sales levels in August 2011. The sales of existing condominiums in Miami-Dade increased 8% from 1,382 to 1,492.

Sales of single family homes increased 5% from 1,009 to 1,059, year on year. Statewide sales of existing single-family homes totalled 18,669 in August 2012, up 10.8% compared to a year ago. Statewide condominium sales totalled 8,767, up 5.7% from those sold in August 2011.

'Miami is experiencing a mini-boom fuelled mostly by demand from international buyers but also by population growth resulting from migration from other states, baby boomers, and local consumers,' Patricia Delinois, residential president of the Miami Association of Realtors.

'Miami's firm position as a major global city is expected to continue to draw demand long into the future, as businesses, residents, visitors and tourists, investors, and vacation and second homebuyers take advantage of all that our vibrant and unique city has to offer,' she added.

Over the last year, the inventory of residential listings in Miami-Dade County has dropped 26% from 15,405 to 11,431. Compared to the previous month, the total inventory of homes decreased 0.2%. The figures also show that currently there are 4.2 months of supply in Miami-Dade.

Strong demand for bank owned (REO) properties and improved processing of short sales continues to yield absorption of distressed listings and to contribute to price appreciation.

In August, 45.8% of all closed residential sales in Miami-Dade County were distressed, including REOs and short sales, compared to 56% in August 2011 and 47% the previous month. In Miami-Dade County, 64% of total closed sales in August were all cash sales, compared to 62% in August 2011 and 64% the previous month. Cash sales accounted for 45% of single family and 78% of condominium closings.

Nearly 90% of foreign buyers in Florida purchase properties all cash, reflecting the stronger presence of international buyers in the Miami real estate market.

Fish hunters new tools: Pitch forks and water skis

By ALEX PEREZ and KINGA JANIK

Eric Young cruised the Illinois River hunting the high-jumping Asian carp, while armed with a pitchfork and wearing a protective football helmet.

These greedy, hungry, flying-fish torpedoes are threatening to invade the Great Lakes, slapping fisherman along the way as the leap out of the water at the sound of boat motors.

"It's like a 30-pound bean bag smashing into you at 30 miles an hour, so it doesn't hurt, but you're well aware you just got hit with a fish," Young said.

Viewers might recognize him as "Showtime" Eric Young when he anchored down in the ring as a pro-wrestler, but now he has set sail for a whole new challenge. From Florida to California, Young is adrift in the world of extreme fishing, learning all of the bizarre ways to snag the big one - such as using paddleboards to reel in sharks or to freedive spear-fishing for striped bass - on Animal Planet's TV series, "Off the Hook: Extreme Catches."

Young called fishing "American ingenuity at its finest" and said the show is about "meeting these people that are tenacious and hardworking" with an "interesting or ingenious way of catching fish."

"Nightline" went with Young in the Illinois River near Bath, Ill., about 200 miles south of Lake Michigan, to hunt a species of the insidious Asian carp. Once imported by catfish farmers in the 1970s to clean their ponds, the invasion has turned into an environmental disaster because the carp can't seem to be stopped.

Nate Wallick and Zach Hoffman, known on YouTube as the Peoria Carp Hunters, came along for the ride to navigate the river. The duo's super-hero YouTube videos showing them using water skis, tubes and homemade armor to kill the invasive carp have catapulted them to fish-fighting fame.

While it may seem like fun and games, the carp hunters mean serious business.

"[The carp] spawn three times a year," Wallick said. "They eat 40 percent of their body weight a day in plankton. They're known to grow up to be 100 pounds. So they put out millions of eggs and just how fast they are reproducing, if they were to get into the Great Lakes, it would be devastating."

Tune into "Nightline" tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET to watch what happens when ABC's Alex Perez goes out on the boat to hunt for carp with the extreme fishing team.

Work Stress Could Raise Heart Risks: Study

Having a tough week at work? Make sure you de-stress -- a new review of studies highlights how work stress could be hurting your health.

The review, published in the journal The Lancet and conducted by researchers at the University College London, shows that people with demanding, straining jobs have an overall 23 percent increased risk of heart attack.

The findings are based on job stress and heart attack data from 200,000 people in Europe, who participated in a total of 13 studies between 1985 and 2006. The studies had an average follow-up period of 7.5 years, during which 2,356 heart attacks or heart-related deaths occurred.

Job stress has also been linked with an increased risk of diabetes in women, as well as shorter telomeres (which could potentially speed up aging), past research has suggested.

In the telomere study, published in the journal PLoS ONE earlier this year, Finnish scientists found that people in the study who were affected by the highest levels of job stress were more likely to have short telomeres, and shortened telomeres are linked with aging and possibly even cancer.

  • Bring Your Dog To Work

A recent study in the <em>International Journal of Workplace Health Management</em> showed that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/01/bringing-dog-to-work-stress_n_1391420.html" target="_hplink">bringing your dog to work</a> could help to lower office stress and boost employee satisfaction. "Pet presence may serve as a low-cost, wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support," study researcher Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., a professor of management at Virginia Commonwealth University, said in a statement. "Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and well-behaved pets are present in the workplace." The study, which looked at the pet-friendly company Replacements, Ltd., showed that employees who brought their dogs in to work experienced <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/01/bringing-dog-to-work-stress_n_1391420.html" target="_hplink">decreases in stress</a> throughout the work day. Meanwhile, self-reported stress <em>increased</em> for people who didn't bring their dogs, and for those who don't have dogs.

  • Laugh It Up

If you're feeling particularly stressed, perhaps it's time to take a quick YouTube break. A small 1989 study in the <em>American Journal of the Medical Sciences</em> showed that<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2556917" target="_hplink"> "mirthful laughter"</a> is linked with lower blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The Mayo Clinic reported that laughter also promotes <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-relief/SR00034" target="_hplink">endorphin release</a> in the brain and relaxes the muscles, which are all key for stress relief.

  • Grab A Shovel And Some Seeds

Caregiving is extremely stressful, but a 2008 survey showed that gardening may help to reduce stress among caregivers. The survey, by BHG.com, showed that 60 percent of caregivers feel <a href="http://www.alz.org/national/documents/release_110308_garden.pdf" target="_hplink">relaxed when they garden</a>, the Alzheimer's Association reported. And, Health.com reported on a Netherlands study, suggesting that gardening can help to <a href="http://www.health.com/health/article/0,,20507878_2,00.html" target="_hplink">lower cortisol levels</a> and boost mood among people who had just finished a stressful task. That's because doing something that requires "involuntary attention" -- like sitting back and enjoying nature -- helps to replenish ourselves, Health.com reported.

  • Crack Open A Book

Just <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5070874/Reading-can-help-reduce-stress.html" target="_hplink">six minutes of reading</a> is enough to help you de-stress, the <em>Telegraph</em> reported. The study, which was sponsored by Galaxy chocolate, suggested that <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5070874/Reading-can-help-reduce-stress.html" target="_hplink">reading was linked with a slower heart rate</a> and muscle relaxation. Drinking tea or coffee, listening to music and taking a walk also seemed to help lower stress, according to the <em>Telegraph</em>.

  • Call Mom

Even if she's not there in person, a call to mom can help lower stress. <em>Scientific American</em> reported on a study in the journal <em>Proceedings of the Royal Society B</em> showing that young girls who <a href="http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2010/05/11/a-phone-call-from-mom-reduces-stress-as-well-as-a-hug/" target="_hplink">talked to their mothers on the phone</a> after completing stressful tasks had decreased cortisol (the stress hormone) in their saliva, and increased oxytocin levels (the bonding hormone). The girls who talked to their mothers on the phone had <a href="http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2010/05/11/a-phone-call-from-mom-reduces-stress-as-well-as-a-hug/" target="_hplink">decreased cortisol</a> and increased oxytocin levels compared with young girls who weren't allowed to contact their mothers at all, <em>Scientific American</em> reported -- girls who hugged their moms in person had a similar reaction to the phone group.

  • Eat Some Chocolate

Dark chocolate doesn't only have health benefits for the heart -- eating it can also help to <a href="http://www.livescience.com/7974-chocolate-reduces-stress-study-finds.html" target="_hplink">lower stress</a>. LiveScience reported on a study illustrating that eating 1.4 ounces of <a href="http://www.livescience.com/7974-chocolate-reduces-stress-study-finds.html" target="_hplink">dark chocolate</a> a day for a two-week period is linked with decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. That study was published in 2009 in the journal <em>Proteome Research</em>. (But of course, chocolate still contains sugar and lots of calories, so make sure you're eating the chocolate in moderation!)

  • Gossip

Gossip may not be viewed as socially "good," but it <em>might</em> have benefits in relieving stress. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/17/gossip-stress-exploitation-heart-rate_n_1211207.html" target="_hplink">gossiping can actually lower stress</a>, stop exploitation of others and police others' bad behavior. "Spreading information about the person whom they had seen behave badly tended to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/17/gossip-stress-exploitation-heart-rate_n_1211207.html" target="_hplink">make people feel better</a>, quieting the frustration that drove their gossip," study researcher Robb Willer, a social psychologist at UC Berkeley, said in a statement. Willer's research was published this year in the <em>Journal of Personality and Social Psychology</em>. So if something's bothering you, go ahead and gab -- but just make sure you move on so you don't dwell on the negative emotions!

    Fred Claus (2007): Family Intervention

The clip Family Intervention from Fred Claus (2007) What are you, nuts? I feel like Patty Hearst! I was just abducted, Nick! You're gonna have to pay something... ...to make up for the hurt I have inside of me. It's not gonna be cheap. I got a lawyer that's got vowels in his last name, Nick. He's gonna contact you and make you feel the hurt I feel from your handlers! Frederick! We're having a family intervention. Your behavior has been unacceptable. Wanda, hi. Hi. You all right? I'm doing terrific. I'm doing great. How've you been? You know, I've been all right. Yeah, I've been working and... That's awesome. Work is really good for someone to do when they're doing stuff. I've been working a lot, too, by the way. And also fighting for my life. My brother's Santa Claus. Yeah, yeah. I can... I can see that. It's a little different. Yeah, the whole thing's been a little bit unusual. Fred, your brother has flown someone in we think can help you. This is Dr. Goldfarb. Hello. Your erratic behavior is putting too much stress on your brother. Mom, for Pete's sake, okay, I'm not stressed out about it. Nick! You're falling apart. I am not. Yes, you are. You're dangerously overweight. He is not! You have no idea what your son is going through! Okay. He is a terrible closet eater. He has developed acid reflux and sleep apnea. I snore. I mean, people snore. It is keeping him up all night... ...and it's affecting his health, not to mention other aspects of our marriage. Oh, ho, ho, Annette. He's having a tough time getting off the ground? I'm just saying.

Global stocks, euro edge lower as QE rally pauses

LONDON (Reuters) - European stocks and the euro both eased on Monday, beginning a new week in cautious fashion after chalking up strong gains in the previous session following the launch of fresh U.S. economic stimulus.

German Bunds, up 13 basis points, clawed back some of their sharp falls from Friday when markets across Europe reacted to news the U.S. Federal Reserve planned to pump $40 billion a month into the economy until the jobs market improves.

Sentiment in all three markets remains broadly unchanged, however, with tests of new multi-month highs expected in the coming weeks for stocks and the single currency.

At 0722 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> index of leading European stocks was down 0.26 percent at 1,117.25 points, pulling back from a 14-month high hit in the previous session. World stocks <.miwd00000pus>, meanwhile, were down 0.12 percent.

Asian stocks were generally higher overnight, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index hitting a 4-1/2 month high, although Tokyo markets were closed.

"There is still good upside potential for stocks as we are re-pricing the 'non-break up' of the euro zone. We've just started to realise all the downside that came from the debt crisis," Louis Capital Markets trader Jerome Troin-Lajous said.

"Now, the main signal we need that would fuel this rally won't be coming from the economic outlook, it will come from the investment flows. A lot of foreign investors have been strongly 'underweight' European stocks and should start to switch out of bonds and out of U.S. equities and into European stocks."

The single currency, meanwhile, was down 0.05 percent to 1.3121against the dollar in early deals, while the greenback was unchanged against a basket of currencies <.dxy>.

Do it yourself and save: Making equipment for the lab, in the lab

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2012) ? The DIY movement has vaulted from the home to the research lab, and it's driven by the same motives: saving tons of money and getting precisely what you want. It's spawning a revolution, says Joshua Pearce of Michigan Technological University.

Three converging forces, all open source, are behind this sea change, he explains in an article in the Sept. 13 issue of Science: software, 3D printers and microcontrollers. With these tools, researchers from all over the world are driving down the cost of doing science by making their own lab equipment.

The open-source Arduino microcontroller is key. "The beauty of this tool is that it's very easy to learn," said Pearce, an associate professor. "It makes it so simple to automate processes."

Here's how it works. The Arduino -- which retails for about $35 at RadioShack -- can run any number of scientific instruments, among them a Geiger counter, an oscilloscope and a DNA sequencer. But it really shines when it operates 3D printers like the open-source RepRap. This microwave-sized contraption starts at about $500 and can actually make parts for itself. Once you have one RepRap, you can make an entire flock. Pearce's lab has five.

3D printers make stuff by laying down sub-millimeter-thick layers of plastic one after another in a specific pattern. This allows users to make devices to their own specifications, so they don't have to make due with what's available off the shelf.

The Arduino controls the process, telling the printer to make anything from toy trains to a lab jack.

Lab jacks raise and lower optical equipment and aren't radically different from the jacks that raise and lower your car, except that they are more precise. Pearce received a quote for a thousand dollar version, which inspired him to design his own. Using a RepRap, inexpensive plastic filament and a few nuts and bolts, Pearce and his students made one for under a buck.

Then they posted the OpenSCAD code they used to make the lab jack on Thingiverse, a web repository of designs where members of the "maker community" can submit their designs for all kinds of objects and receive feedback.

"Immediately someone I'd never met said, 'This isn't going to work quite right, you need to do this,'" Pearce said. "We made a simple change, and now I have a lab jack that's superior to our original design."

Thingiverse is a child of the free and open-source software movement, or FOSS. Not only does it provide top-notch designs for all manner of objects, it can bring thousands of expert minds to bear on a problem, Pearce said. It's the ultimate in teamwork.

"It is creating a gift economy. We've paid into the community by submitting our designs, and we get payment back in the form of excellent feedback and free access to other peoples work. The more you give, the more you get, and in the process everyone wins," he said.

"The Thingiverse community already has a whole line of open-source designs for over 30,000 things, and everyday it's only getting better."

And it's cheap, which is where the revolution comes in.

At Michigan Tech, Pearce is organizing a student-based Enterprise to do open-source projects for industry and to build custom-made instrumentation for university faculty at a fraction of the cost. "This gives students the skills they need and lets them benefit the entire field," he said.

In university research labs everywhere, thousands of dollars that once paid for equipment can now support graduate students. High schools will be able to afford good science labs. More research can be funded with fewer dollars, driving more discoveries.

"Using open-source hardware has easily saved our research group thousands of dollars, and we are only getting warmed up. This will change the way things are done," Pearce said. "There's no stopping it."

To see and use the designs Pearce's research group has submitted to Thingiverse, including a replacement for a $2,500 automated filter wheel changer, a laser welding system, and the open-source RecycleBot that turns waste plastic like milk jugs into 3D printer filament, go to http://www.thingiverse.com/jpearce/things .

Pearce holds faculty appointments in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech.

(AP) ? As Iran's president crafts his talking points for his annual trip to New York, one message is likely to remain near the top: Tehran has not closed the door on nuclear dialogue and is ready to resume negotiations with world powers.

The offer is not very different from those coming out of Washington and other capitals. The challenge is figuring out how to overcome the huge divides after three rounds of high-level meetings since April failed to make headway.

Questions over whether the diplomatic effort still has a pulse will closely follow Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during his time at the U.N. General Assembly later this month ? his last as Iranian president before elections next June for his successor. His expected speeches and interviews will be scrutinized for any hint Iran is softening its positions on the nuclear talks as Western sanctions bite deeper and Israeli leaders contemplate military action dismiss diplomacy as a dead end.

For the moment, Iran appears to favor a strategy of pumping just enough life into the prospect of renewed dialogue.

Officials in Tehran have kept open channels with the U.N. nuclear agency and European Union envoys over possibilities to restart the talks with the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany.

"Iran will not distance itself from talks," said Ismail Kowsari, a member of Iran's influential parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy.

And the nations involved in the talks all hope to avoid an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities ? and the possibility of igniting a larger war.

"In that sense, cold gridlock is better than hot combat," said Karim Sadjadpour, an Iranian affairs expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

But it's also clear that Iran has not publicly backed off its demands from the previous failed rounds. They include recognition of Iran's right for uranium enrichment ? at the center of the nuclear standoff ? and calls for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit Iran's critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks. Last week, Iran received at least a symbolic boost when the 120-nation Nonaligned Movement, meeting in Tehran, backed Iran's claims of seeking a peaceful nuclear program.

The U.S. and others worry Iran could use its enrichment labs to produce warhead-grade material. Iran insists it seeks only to make nuclear fuel for energy and medical reactors.

The West, meanwhile, has stuck with its blueprint of what's been described as "stop, shut and ship."

The mainstay is forcing Iran to halt enrichment uranium to 20 percent purity, which is much closer to weapons grade than the 3.5 percent needed for Iran's lone electricity-producing reactor. Iran would also have to close its underground Fordo enrichment site south of Tehran ? far smaller than Iran's main enrichment facility but believed virtually impervious to air attack ? and ship abroad its stockpile of 20 percent-enriched uranium.

During the last talks in June in Moscow, the West tried to sweeten the package by offering to waive sanctions on airplane parts and other goods. A former Iranian nuclear negotiator, Hossein Mousavian, described it as offering peanuts in return for diamonds.

"Tehran is not hopeful about the talks," said Sergei Barseghian, a commentator at the independent Etemad newspaper in Tehran. "Sanctions and military threats have been increased since the last round of negotiations."

Still, Ahmadinejad will arrive in the U.S. with all sides clinging to the diplomatic efforts ? and with perhaps some extra breathing room against a possible Israeli military strike.

Israeli officials appear to have throttled back on their threats after facing an unusually sharp backlash from key ally Washington, including the U.S. military chief, Gen. Martin Dempsey, effectively ruling out American backing for an Israeli strike at this time. The Obama administration, instead, urges for time to let tightening sanctions choke off the Iranian economy.

Military analysts say air strikes would likely bring only setbacks, but no permanent blows, to Iran's nuclear program. It also could send oil prices skyrocketing and put U.S. troops in the Gulf under threat ? unsettling scenarios for the White House in an election year.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said earlier this week that "a diplomatic process" remains the best route to reach a "completely verifiable" agreement with Iran not to seek nuclear arms. "But that window will not remain open indefinitely," he added.

Iran's main allies on the Security Council also have intensified calls to keep the talks on track. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday that more meetings are expected to try to end the current impasse. "It's very important not to lose the momentum," he said.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei this week urged Iran to reach accords with the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency over inspections that could clear the way for more nuclear talks. A main obstacle is U.N. demands for greater access to the Parchin military complex near Tehran to probe suspicions that Iran carried out blast tests that could be intended for a nuclear trigger. Iran denies the claims but has yet to agree to open up the site for wider inspections.

"Nuclear talks are mostly likely going nowhere unless there is an agreement on the guidelines for inspections," said Scott Lucas, an Iranian affairs expert at Britain's Birmingham University. "You need a protocol for U.N. inspections of nuclear sites. Otherwise, it's hard to see the negotiations resuming."

It's also unclear how much Ahmadinejad is empowered to discuss the stalled talks during his coming visit to the U.N.

Iran's nuclear negotiations are overseen directly by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has largely pushed Ahmadinejad to the political margins after he tried to challenge the near-absolute power of the ruling theocracy. Ahmadinejad cannot independently set Iranian policies, but he remains the international face of Iran and his remarks at the U.N. and other forums are interpreted as messages from the ruling clerics.

Statements earlier this week suggest he may use the U.N. stage to press Iran's demand that lifting sanctions must be part of the nuclear negotiations.

On a live TV talk show, Ahmadinejad acknowledged that the oil and banking sanctions have presented "barriers" to Iran's economy. "It is an all-out, hidden, heavy war" to force concessions on Tehran's nuclear program, he said.

Nicholas Burns, a former No. 3 official at the State Department, said failure to restart the negotiations between Iran and the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany should not be considered the last option for Washington. Burns, now a professor of diplomacy and international politics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, said that could lead to "a final attempt" at direct talks with Tehran.

"It is in our interest to seek direct U.S.-Iran talks," he said, "to determine whether or not there is a diplomatic solution short of war."

Garden Variety Would Like To Remind You That First Friday Can Be ...

First Friday is often strictly celebrated in the artistic sense (for good reason) but sometimes the less-artistically-inclined people among us have a little something to celebrate too. Namely food, drinks, and good times. That?s the idea behind Garden Variety?s pop-up bar tonight, featuring Spot Burger, The Dapper Dog, and Little Baby?s Ice Cream. Because sometimes a great meal can be a piece of art, or ? something more.

Film of the Month Update!

It's been an exciting, exhausting week. The Shooting People Film of the Month leaderboard now looks like this:

Okay, so it's not as pretty-looking as when Jenny Ringo was in first place like it was at the beginning of the week, but we are still in the top 5 which means we're still in with a chance of getting through to the next round! It just needs to stay in the top 5 for the next 12 days, which is a really long time!

Hope it goes without saying at this point but if you are a Shooting People member, please click the link and give it some stars!

Competition has been fierce and at one point the film fell to 9th place and didn't look like it had much chance of getting any higher. I've spent pretty much every non-working, non-nappy-changing minute online pleading with people to vote which is probably a bit annoying now, but like Gabriel Byrne says to Albert Finney in Miller's Crossing?- 'I don't ask much and I don't ask often.'

Okay, the second part of that sentence may not be true anymore, but once this competition is out of the way I promise I will get on with the business of actually making stuff again.

It's been really hard work to get this far, but pretty rewarding too. All kinds of people have seen the film now and I've had some fantastic feedback. When we were shooting Jenny Ringo and the Cabaret from Hell I made the assertion that I wouldn't even think about releasing it until the first film had been seen by at least a thousand people. This seemed an over-ambitious target and for a while I thought we would never make it, but as a result of the Shooting People competition the film has now been seen 711 times on vimeo which is fantastic! I've also seen some great films by other people and have lined up a number of them to show at MovieBar in the coming months (speaking of which, MovieBar on Monday was amazing! Standing room only, some of the best films we've screened and a wonderful audience that included my mum and dad).

The support I've had from friends and fans of the film has been incredible and I'm really grateful to everyone who has shared the link or voted for it or left a comment. It makes me wonder what we could achieve if there was a similar competition that didn't require you to be a paid member to vote, so if anyone is aware of anything like that let me know!

But it's not over yet. I still need stars to be in with a chance of winning and I'm starting to run out of contacts! If you're reading this and you're not a Shooting People member you can still help! Just share the link on Facebook and Twitter and ask if any filmmaking types you know are able to vote. The more views we get the better so please do encourage people to watch the film anyway.

I suspect this coming week is going to be even harder than the previous week so wish me luck and I'll check in with you when I can!
