Food and Drink |

Food and drink have become a major part of most people?s lives, in particular their social lives. In fact the phrase ?food and drink? produces over 89 million hits on the Google website. Excessiveness in either is of course unhealthy, but perhaps this is one of the reasons why people see good food or good wine as something special, something to treat themselves with.

Guides to good food, wine and restaurants have become big business. Egon Ronay?s ?Guide to the Best Restaurants and Gastropubs in the UK? which provides detailed reviews of over 500 restaurants and gastropubs has sold over 2 million copies. Its simple to compare style of awarding up to three stars to each restaurant is clearly a hit with readers.

?The Good Food Guide? edited by Elizabeth Carter sells itself as Britain?s leading restaurant guide and is currently in it 56th edition, detailing over 1,500 eateries from gastropubs to high end dining.

Fine wine guides are also a big seller, with books such as Clarke?s ?Fine Wine Guide: A Connoisseur?s Bible? and Johnson-Bell?s ?Good Food, Fine Wine: A Practical Guide to Finding the Perfect Match? both readily available on the internet it is clear that there is a high demand for such guides.

This is not surprising as the United Kingdom is the second largest importer of wine in the world. Wine sales in the UK increased 25% between 2001 and 2005. In 2004 the estimated wine consumption was 1.2 billion litres. In particular there has been an increase in the consumption of so-called New World wines, for example those from Australia or the USA instead of traditional producers such as France. California now produces 2 billion litres of wine every year, making it the fourth biggest producer behind Italy, France and Spain. In 2004, New World wines accounted for over 55% of total consumption in the UK.

Afghan president calls for calm over Quran burning protests

KABUL // Afghanistan's president yesterday pleaded for calm in a televised address to the nation after the burning of Qurans at a US base sparked days of deadly protests that have killed dozens, including US soldiers.

Two protesters died in demonstrations and seven US troops were wounded in a grenade attack on their base today in northern Afghanistan, a day after two US military advisers - a lieutenant-colonel and a major - were executed by an Afghan colleague inside the heavily guarded interior ministry compound.

All advisers from the Nato-led force have been recalled to barracks.

"Now is the time to return to calm and not let our enemies use this situation," Mr Karzai said in his address. Asked about the recall of Nato mission staff from ministries, Mr Karzai said it was understandable.

"It is a temporary step at a time when the people of Afghanistan are angry over the burning of the holy Quran," Mr Karzai said. "We are not against this," he added.

Mr Karzai "condemned with the strongest words" the treatment of Islam's holy book and said the perpetrators should be punished, but told his countrymen: "Now that we have shown our feelings it is time to be calm and peaceful." He said he respected the emotions of Afghans upset by the Quran burning.

The Taliban has called for revenge attacks for the burnings, after Afghan soldiers discovered American colleagues burning Qurans at a rubbish dump at Bagram, the main US air base in the country.

More than 30 people, including four US soldiers have died in the uproar over the burning of Qurans, The two soldiers killed yesterday were found in their secure office, shot in the back of the head.

"There is a suspect who is an employee of the interior ministry. He has been identified. Right now the police are trying to arrest him. He is on the run," the ministry said in a statement, citing initial findings by investigators.

The other two US soldiers were also shot dead by an Afghan colleague.

The US president, Barack Obama, has apologised for the burning of the Qurans and other religious material, which the Pentagon has said was a mistake.

Members of the international military coalition described the removal of advisers as a temporary security measure, stressing they did not expect it to affect partnerships with the Afghans who are key to preparing the country's security forces to take on more responsibility as international troops draw down over the next two years.

The Nato recall affects advisers numbered "in the low hundreds," said Lieutenant-Colonel Jimmie Cummings, a spokesman for the international force.

The US government had already ordered its government advisers to stay inside the secure embassy compound in the week out of fear of retribution over the burnings, said Gavin Sundwall, a US Embassy spokesman.

Saturday's shootings at the interior ministry were the latest in a rising number of incidents where Afghan soldiers or policemen, or gunmen wearing their uniforms, have killed Nato-led forces.

Last month, France suspended its training programme and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

A recent study found more than 60 foreign soldiers had been killed by their Afghan colleagues between May 2007 and last May.

A leaked classified coalition report said last month that they "reflect a rapidly growing systemic homicide threat".

Contract employ, contract buy, leaseback and finance lease are the main kinds of car leasing options available. Contract employ is a kind of long phrase rental arrangement which may be opted with regard to by business people and individual users. This type of car renting is suitable best for those who prefer to pay for small payments initially each month, there isn?t any risk of depreciation or the problem of getting rid of the car, for the user.

It may be the finance company which provides the contract hire service, it buys the car, takes about the risk associated with any possible depreciation or even loss as well as takes the responsibility of getting rid of the vehicle at the end of the word of the actual contract. The contract is between 2 and 5 many years, and the customer has to take a credit score check. So you must be fairly confident that the credit document is as much as scratch. Every customer might have a tailor made contract to match his person needs as well as VAT authorized business may claim half the VAT costs. Vehicles for pure business use may claim all of the VAT costs. Monthly rentals can also be offset with profits which are taxable.

Contract Purchase

Contract purchase is a form of car leasing chosen by businesses or businesses. They employ expensive vehicles and wish to be given the choice of either handing over the car at the conclusion of the word of the actual contract, or to purchase the car at the end of the period. This type of contract does away with the risk of any kind of depreciation. Here, an preliminary payment is made and is followed up by monthly payments. In this form of car renting, the vehicle is shown as an asset within the account books of the business. At the end of the term of agreement, the business can buy the car with a balloon amount and declare ownership from the car, or it may return the car and use for a brand new contract with regard to another vehicle.

Leaseback

Leaseback is a form of car leasing and is used through businesses. Companies which desire to free the administrative centre generated from the sale of the vehicle from market value to some finance company, generally use for this sort of contract.
Finance Lease

Finance rent is a kind of commercial leasing and it is utilized by businesses which rent out a vehicle for a fixed time Van Leasing period, from a finance organization that owns the vehicle. The client needs to pay monthly payments with interest which covers the costs. When a finance rent is taken, the organization which gets into for the contract, has to cover the price of insurance coverage, taxes and services. Finance leases could be conditional sales, or a kind of hire buy. Depreciation as well as resale risks may be borne through the customer. All this should be examined before deciding on the right alternative on your own or your company.

Cornell Center on the Microenvironment and Metastasis and Neuberger Berman Lung Cancer Research Center findings suggest targeting a single protein may help stop cancer spread

NEW YORK (Feb. 22, 2012) -- Oncologists have known that in order for cancer cells to spread, they must transform themselves so they can detach from a tumor and spread to a distant organ. Now, scientists at Weill Cornell Medical College have revealed critical steps in what happens next -- how these cells reverse the process, morphing back into classical cancer that can now grow into a new tumor.

Their findings, now published online and in a upcoming issue of Cancer Research and funded through a National Cancer Institute grant to the Cornell Center on the Microenvironment and Metastasis and the Neuberger Berman Foundation, show that a single protein, versican, is key to this process in breast cancer, the tumor they studied. When researchers stopped versican from functioning in mice, breast cancer could not "seed" themselves into the lungs and form secondary tumors.

"Our findings both help us understand how breast cancer metastasizes to the lungs and ways to possibly prevent that deadly spread," says the study's senior investigator, Dr. Vivek Mittal, an associate professor of cell and developmental biology in cardiothoracic surgery and director of the Neuberger Berman Lung Cancer Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College.

"These are exciting insights into a poorly investigated area," Dr. Mittal says. "There are no clinically approved drugs now that can effectively target metastatic lesions, which is why more than 90 percent of human cancer-related deaths come from spread of the disease from a primary tumor."

"The results of this study are a critical step in deconstructing the process of metastases -- which is critical to curing our patients," says co-author Dr. Linda T. Vahdat, professor of medicine, chief of the Solid Tumor Service and director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at Weill Cornell. "As a direct result of this study, we are working on ways to interrupt the process by which tumors co-opt the infrastructure in our bodies to grow and spread."

This important study starts to unravel the mechanistic basis of cancer metastases, not only in breast cancer but possibly in other types of cancer, says Dr. Nasser Altorki, the David B. Skinner Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and director of the division of thoracic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. "The need for a prepared and receptive soil may be required for cancer cell seeding regardless of the primary cancer's site of origin."

The Seed and the Soil

Cancer researchers have believed that for a cancer to spread, its "seed" must find the right "soil" in a distant organ in order to thrive. And they have hypothesized that this seed is formed through a process known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), in which cancer cells lose their sticky grip to other cells in a primary tumor and become more mobile, able to travel through the blood to a distant organ.

But what happens next is conjecture. Scientists have speculated that the cells undergo a reverse process, called mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET), in which the cancer seeds morph back into epithelial cells that can make contact with tissue and integrate in the new organ. Little is known about MET compared to EMT.

In this study, Dr. Mittal, along with his colleagues at Weill Cornell, studied mouse models of spontaneous breast cancer development. They first discovered that primary breast tumors send a signal that forces bone-marrow-derived hematopoietic cells to move into the lungs of the mice. "This appears to be the soil the cancer seeds need," says Dr. Mittal. The next question was obvious: What is it about the soil that helps the seed?

The team found that a subtype of these bone marrow cells expressed versican, which allowed the cancer cells, once they traveled to the lungs, to morph back into epithelial cells. "The primary tumor sets up the lung microenvironment to promote metastasis," he says. "MET resulted not from properties within the cancer cell itself, but due to a unique crosstalk between the microenvironment and tumor cells in the lung."

In their next experiment, the researchers blocked versican production by injecting small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in the bone marrow that silenced the versican gene, which prevented MET and blocked tumor outgrowth in the lung.

Human Tumors Express Versican

Next, they investigated human breast metastases to the lung, utilizing lung samples obtained from breast cancer patients contributed by researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University. "We found versican was highly expressed in those lung tumors, which matched what we found in our mice," Dr. Mittal says. "This all made sense to us, because versican has been linked to cancer progression, although no one knew why.

"This is the first study demonstrating the significance of MET in the formation of macrometastases in distant organs," Dr. Mittal says. "Given the findings, we now have a potential strategy to stop cancer spread before it starts, or to shut it down if it has already occurred."
