Young leads Eagles past Giants

QB substitute for Vick leads 18-play drive, caps it with late TD pass for 4-6 Philadelphia

By TOM CANAVAN

updated 11:28 p.m. ET Nov. 20, 2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Eagles destroyed the Giants' season a year ago at the Meadowlands with a 28-point onslaught in the final seven minutes.

This time, Andy Reid's undermanned team used the slow and excruciating method to hurt the Giants once again and tighten the NFC East race.

Using a quarterback whose only pass this season had been intercepted to replace Michael Vick and a receiver who did not have a catch all season, Philadelphia marched 80 yards in a roughly 9 minutes and defeated the Giants 17-10 Sunday night on an 8-yard go-ahead touchdown pass from Vince Young to Riley Cooper with 2:45 to play.

"We knew we had to dig deep," said Cooper who had his first five catches of the season for 75 yards, with the final 8 being the difference in breathing life into the Eagles (4-6).

"Everybody contributed," Cooper said. "It was not just one player, not just one long play. We pieced that last drive together piece by piece."

What was so surprising was that the "Dream Team" did it in the fourth quarter, a period that had seen them lose five games earlier this season.

The Eagles found the solution this time with an 18-play march over 8:51 that sent the Giants (6-4) to their second straight loss.

"It's definitely a big win," said Young, who was 23 of 36 for 258 yards, two touchdown and three interceptions. "You see the excitement and the smiles on the guys and that's what we need, what we have to have."

Philadelphia converted six third-down plays with DeSean Jackson setting up the first-and-goal with a 10-yard catch to the 10, and Young capping it with his second touchdown pass of the game to a wide-open Cooper.

"We were taking our time, making plays and the guys came up with big plays on third down," Young said.

Jackson, who was benched for last week's game for missing a team meeting, finished with six catches for 88 yards and set up a touchdown pass to former Giant Steve Smith with a 51-yard punt return. LeSean McCoy added 113 yards rushing, with 60 coming on a late run that iced the game.

"Vince, stepping in for the great Michael Vick, that's a tough thing to do and he did it and the guys rallied around him," Reid said. "The offensive line and defensive line played well, the offensive line had a huge challenge when it counted and they were able to put some things together."

The Eagles, of course, made Reid sweat out the final minutes.

Eli Manning, who tied it with a 24-yard TD pass to Victor Cruz earlier in the quarter, drove the Giants from their own 10 to the Eagles 21 with the final 47 yards coming on a catch-and-run by Cruz with 1:25 to play.

However, Manning stepped out of the pocket on the next play and was hit from behind by Jason Babin and fumbled. Derek Landi recovered at the 26, sending the Giants to their second straight tough loss, coming on the heels of a 7-point loss to San Francisco, a game that ended with New York at the Niners 2.

"It was important because it keeps us alive," linebacker Jamar Chaney said. "We had faith coming in. We really did. We might have been banged up, but we had faith. I feel good about our defensive effort. We came up big. It was time for the defense to make a play and we have a lot of playmakers out there. Jason got the sack and Landri got the ball."

It dropped New York into a tie for first place with Dallas in the NFC East with six games to play and left the Eagles two games behind. The Cowboys beat the Redskins in overtime after Washington missed a game-winning field-goal attempt.

"This is as big a disappointment as we have had around here in a long time," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said in ripping his team for a no-show effort.

It also marked the second straight year the Eagles rallied late to beat New York at the Meadowlands with last year's 38-31 decision coming in a game that Philadelphia rallied from 21 points down late.

While Young made several big plays to spark the Eagles' offense, he also threw three interceptions, the most costly being one that Aaron Ross picked off in the end zone on a second-and-9 from the New York 16 with Philadelphia ahead 10-3 with 5 minutes left in the third quarter.

New York eventually tied it early in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard TD pass from Manning to Cruz. It was set up two plays earlier when Manning rolled out of the pocket and found Hakeem Nicks for a 47-yard gain on third down to the Eagles 24.

Manning was 18 of 35 for 264 yards, and Cruz had six catches for 128 yards. The Giants' running game failed to get going, rushing for just 29 yards.

"We can't always afford to be in those positions," Manning said of the recent late rallies. "I think we still feel confident when we get in there that we're going to move the ball and we're going to give ourselves a chance to win. It is just a matter of you don't always want to be in that position."

The first half was typical of an Eagles-Giants meeting: chippy, intense, hard-fought and, not surprisingly, ugly.

If there was a surprise, it was that the defenses dominated. The norm was Jackson taunting the Giants in more ways than one, including one that cost the Eagles a 50-yard pass completion.

Jackson set up both of the Eagles' scores in the first half. He caught a 32-yard pass early in the second quarter to set up a 33-yard field goal by Alex Henery and then brought back excruciating memories from last season with a 51-yard punt return that was a carbon copy of his winning 65-yard punt return on the final play of the Eagles' 38-31 Meadowlands Miracle, a game Philadelphia rallied from a 21-point deficit in the final seven-plus minutes.

What made the return so eerie was that Jackson fielded Steve Weatherford's punt at his own 35, circled right and then ran down the sideline in front of the Giants' bench ? the same thing he did last season. The only difference was Weatherford pushed him out of bounds at the 14; Matt Dodge was the Giants' punter last season.

It didn't matter. One play later, Young found former Giants receiver Steve Smith cutting under the zone and he easily outran linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka into the end zone with 1:22 left in the half.

It was enough time for Manning to get the Giants on the board. A 21-yard pass to Cruz on the first play got the ball the 41 and a late 10-catch by running back D.J. Ware on a play in which he suffered a concussion set up Lawrence Tynes' 48-yard field goal.

Notes: The game was Coughlin's 250th regular-season game, making him the 19th head coach in NFL history to reach the mark. He is 139-111, including 71-51 with the Giants. ... Reid said the Eagles had no major injuries. ... Giants rookie LB Mark Herzlich started his first game and the cancer survivor had four tackles. ... The Eagles sacked Manning three times. The Giants only got Young once. ... Giants Pro Bowl G Chris Snee played sick and said he threw up several times during the game. ... Philadelphia was 9 of 17 on third down.

Gul says Turkey can be EU's "growth engine" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Turkey is still determined to join the European Union despite the current crisis in the euro zone and can become the bloc's economic "growth engine," President Abdullah Gul said in an interview published on Sunday.

Gul rejected concerns that the economic problems facing the euro zone meant that any further expansion of the 27-member EU should be put on hold.

EU countries agreed unanimously in 2005 to start talks with mainly Muslim Turkey with the goal of full membership.

However, French President Nicolas Sarkozy remains opposed to Turkey joining and German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she favors a "privileged partnership" for Turkey rather than full membership.

"Some people who think in a narrow scope and who do lack a strategic perspective consider Turkey's membership a burden," Gul, who is traveling to Britain this week for a three-day visit, told Britain's Sunday Telegraph.

"But those who can think 30 years, 60 years ahead, and who can think about the changing trends in the economy and the changing centers of power, can understand how much strength Turkey can bring to the existing strength of Europe."

Gul said Turkey's membership of NATO had been considered the only reason for it to be allowed to join but now its booming economy, where GDP grew by 11 percent in the first quarter of 2011, was as valid.

"Consider the potential that Turkey has: Turkey's position, her assets, the value she can add in terms of energy resources, her population, the dynamism she can bring into Europe, and also the growth that she can bring, with Turkey being the engine of this growth."

He said Turkey viewed the euro zone crisis as a temporary situation.

"We approach the negotiations with a strategic vision, and are very determined."

Turkey has also been taking a tough approach against Syria over its crackdown on opponents of President Bashar al-Assad and Gul said his country would back the Syrian people.

"When any kind of movement has its roots among the people of the country and the walls of fear come down, then the end result is very obvious," he said.

"With a strong and clear voice we are saying that the legitimate demands of the people are being supported by us. We enable them to have their meetings and discussions in a free environment, and provide a diplomatic platform.

"I strongly believe that there is no place any more for authoritarian regimes -- single party systems that do not have accountability or transparency -- on the shores of the Mediterranean."

Army sergeant gets five years in Afghan misconduct probe (Reuters)

TACOMA, Wash (Reuters) ? A U.S. Army sergeant was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday for crimes that included beating a subordinate whose whistle-blowing led to an investigation of rogue soldiers murdering unarmed Afghan civilians.

Staff Sergeant David Bram was found guilty by court-martial on most of the charges against him, becoming the 11th soldier convicted in connection with the widest-ranging prosecution of U.S. military atrocities and other misconduct during 10 years of war in Afghanistan.

The jury panel consisting of two officers and three enlisted men deliberated for 90 minutes before rendering its guilty verdict on all but two of the nine counts against Bram. It took the panel about another hour to decide his sentence.

Addressing the court before sentencing, Bram apologized to "the people of Afghanistan" and said, "I pray I have not deterred any young Americans from serving their nation.

"I truly do understand the weight of what I've done," he added, choking back tears. "I understand I must be punished for my actions. I ask for mercy, not for myself but for my beautiful children."

Bram, 27, the father of a young son and daughter, will be eligible for parole after serving about 3 years and four months of his five-year sentence. Prosecutors had recommended a prison term of seven years.

Bram was acquitted of charges that he mistreated a detainee while on patrol last year in Afghanistan's Kandahar province or that he planted evidence near the body of an Afghan casualty.

But he was found guilty of, among other offenses, solicitation to commit murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit assault and trying to impede an investigation.

He was also convicted of taking part with several soldiers in the May 2010 beating of Army Private Justin Stoner, an informant whose report of rampant hashish use in their platoon led Army investigators to uncover other crimes, including unprovoked killings of innocent villagers.

Pentagon officials have said misconduct exposed by the case had damaged the image of the United States around the globe.

Photographs entered as evidence in the investigation showed some of the soldiers casually posing with bloodied Afghan corpses, drawing comparisons to the 2004 Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.

Five members of the infantry unit formerly known as the 5th Stryker Brigade ultimately were charged with premeditated murder for killing Afghan villagers in random slayings staged to look like legitimate combat engagements.

The accused ringleader, Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs, was convicted by court-martial last week of murdering three unarmed civilians, drawing an automatic life prison sentence, but he will be eligible for parole in 8-1/2 years.

His onetime right-hand-man turned chief accuser, Army Specialist Jeremy Morlock was sentenced in March to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to the same three murders. He also was one of several soldiers to testify against Bram.

A third soldier charged with murder, Adam Winfield, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison. A fourth, Andrew Holmes, was sentenced to seven years after pleading guilty to a single count of murder. The fifth, Michael Wagnon, still faces court martial.

Bram received the stiffest penalty among seven other Stryker Brigade members who were charged with lesser offenses in the investigation.

The other six, convicted either by court-martial or guilty pleas, received sentences ranging from demotion or dishonorable discharge to 90 days of hard labor and jail terms of up to nine months.

Beyonce's Wedding Dress Was Designed by Mom, Tina Knowles! (omg!)

Beyonce's Wedding Dress Was Designed by Mom, Tina Knowles!

It seems that four out of five Hollywood brides commission Vera Wang to design their bespoke wedding gown -- unless, of course, the star's parent happens to be a talented fashion designer.

Such was the case for Beyonce Knowles' April 4, 2008 wedding to Jay-Z, where she donned a gorgeous gown designed by mom Tina Knowles, Beyonce's stylist, Ty Hunter, confirms to Us Weekly.

During Bey's days of Destiny's Child, Tina, 57, would design the girls' costumes and continued to do so while her daughter kicked off her solo career. In addition, Tina also has her own brand with Beyonce, House of Dereon, named after her mother, which showed at London Fashion Week this September.

Beyonce, 30, isn't the only Hollywood bride who added a special touch to her nuptials with a custom-made design from a parent: Dylan Lauren (of Dylan's Candy Bar fame) wore a beautiful wedding dress by dad, Ralph Lauren, when she tied the knot in June.

ASUS and Dell not exiting the tablet business | Ubergizmo

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer PrimeOn Thursday, the folks over at DigiTimes reported that companies like ASUS, Acer and Dell were looking to retreat from the tablet business due to the OEMs struggling to make a dent in Apple?s share of the tablet market and the arrival of low cost tablets like the Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet. Well, two of the companies decided to set the story straight by responding to those rumors. ASUS? spokes man Gary Key was quoted as saying, ?As usual, the rumors and reports from Digitimes are incorrect. Asus is not exiting the Android tablet business.? Let?s not forget that the company has the Transformer Prime tablet slated for December, so it seemed like a pretty odd rumor in the first place.

A Dell spokesman also said that the company didn?t have any plans to exit the business either, while an Acer representative wasn?t available for comment. So for those of you who were worried about your favorite company exiting the tablet business, fret not. However it is noted that the manufacturers could be scaling back on resources for Android tablets to focus on Windows 8 tablets instead. I guess we?ll just have to wait and see.

(AP) ? Kurt Budke believed in Oklahoma State when no one else did, and he wasn't afraid to show it.

Less than two years after his Cowgirls failed to win any of their 16 conference games, Budke led them up against powerhouse Oklahoma and reigning national player of the year Courtney Paris. He supported his upstart team with quite the fashion statement: the brightest orange blazer he could find.

Behind a scintillating 45-point game from Andrea Riley, the Cowgirls upset the sixth-ranked Sooners for the first time in nine years.

Wherever Budke went, he won.

The charismatic coach who turned the Cowgirls into an NCAA tournament regular was killed along with assistant coach Miranda Serna and two other people in a plane crash in Arkansas late Thursday. The two coaches, who first united as player and coach 16 years ago, had been on a recruiting trip.

Budke frequently offered his players encouragement from the sidelines, but he also could be firm, raising his deep voice. And on more than one occasion, he grabbed a microphone to speak to the Gallagher-Iba Arena crowd after a win.

"Coach Budke was a ball coach. What he did to turn this program around was unbelievable but that's not important right now," said Jim Littell, Budke's assistant who will replace him on an interim basis.

"What's important is he was a father figure for these kids. He had a tremendous knack of taking kids that maybe were struggling in some part of their life and making it better for them. That was his strongest trait."

Serna, 36, was one of his top helpers along the way. Before spending the last seven seasons at OSU, she played on one of his four teams that won the junior-college national title at Trinity Valley (Texas) and was his assistant at Louisiana Tech for the last of three straight trips to the NCAA tournament.

The Guadalupita, N.M., native was his recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State, which has been to the postseason the past five years. University President Burns Hargis said Serna was the first in her family to go to college.

"I loved her energy for the game," Oklahoma State men's basketball coach Travis Ford said. "She had a great enthusiasm for the game. She enjoyed recruiting and she enjoyed the process of that and just had a warm heart."

When Budke took over the program, the Cowgirls had finished with a losing record in five of their previous seven seasons and never finished more than a game over .500 during that span.

The Cowgirls went 0-16 in Big 12 play in his first season, then secured their first bid to the NCAA tournament in 11 years. The next year brought a trip to the round of 16.

"You learn how to lose, and that's a bad habit," he once said of those early struggles. "Sometimes, it's easier to lose than to fight back, so we had to change habits and expectations."

Budke had little to sell but a dream, but it was enough to convince the WNBA-bound Riley to come make her mark. She left as the program's career scoring leader.

"I came to this league because I wanted to coach against the best, night in and night out," he once said. "These players that want to come play for us want to play against the best. That's how we go out and recruit."

A Salina, Kan., native, Budke was a married father of three, including a daughter currently at Oklahoma State.

"I looked at him almost as a mentor," Ford said. "I can't tell you how many times I would pick up the phone and ask him how he ran his zone offense. He'd come down to the office or I'd go up to his and we would sit and talk.

"Just somebody who I had the utmost respect for as a person and a husband and father and obviously as a coach. In this profession, the way it gets crazy at times, he had everything in perspective."

Ford called Budke "a complete father figure" for his team.

"It's his personality, his greatest strength," Ford said. "He just really had great relationships with the girls and could communicate with them."

Budke played basketball for Barton County (Kan.) Junior College and graduated from Washburn in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. After some early small-college jobs, he built the JUCO powerhouse at Trinity Valley before hooking up with Louisiana Tech, once one of the top programs in the women's game.

"When I first went there and got into the gym office, I saw eight players in the outer office hanging around, enjoying themselves and relaxing," said Leon Barmore, who made nine Final Four trips with the Lady Techsters and also hired Budke.

"This was a player's coach. The players loved to play for him. He presented an environment which was relaxing. He made you feel warm and at ease, that always stood out to me."

After playing for Budke, Serna went on to finish her playing career at Houston before returning to Trinity Valley to start her coaching career under Budke. They won another JUCO national title together in 1999 before Serna gained more experience as an assistant at three other schools.

Budke hired her again for his final year at Louisiana Tech, then brought her along to Stillwater.

"Miranda was a really great person," said Carlene Mitchell, another of Budke's former players from Trinity Valley who's now the coach at UC Santa Barbara.

"She worked hard. She believed in him. That's why she stayed. ... She had some opportunities to look at some other jobs, but she wanted to bring in players and help him win at Oklahoma State."

Budke moved to Louisiana Tech when Kim Mulkey left to become the coach at Baylor, where she has won a national championship and currently has the No. 1 team in the country.

"It just hits home with all of us in this profession that truly we just coach a game," Mulkey said, adding that she turned to her son and started crying when she heard the news.

"There's a bigger picture out there and it's not a basketball game, it puts life in perspective. I feel for the Oklahoma State community, how many more tragedies can they endure?"

The crash is the second major tragedy for the sports program in about a decade. In January 2001, 10 men affiliated with the university's men's basketball team died in a Colorado plane crash.

Mitchell has a link to both. In addition to playing for one of Budke's national championship teams, she was an assistant at Oklahoma State in 2001. She was floored when she heard the news.

"He was just an amazing man," Mitchell said. "I'm so sick and sad. He helped me get the job out here and was so excited when I got hired. He was screaming into the phone.

"You want to say that Oklahoma State is cursed with those two tragedies."

Sherri Coale, the coach at rival Oklahoma, remembered Budke as a fantastic coach, a tremendous competitor, a devoted father and husband and a humble but courageous leader of young people.

Texas A&M coach Gary Blair called Serna a rising star in recruiting and Budke his closest friend in the Big 12, with both sharing experience at Louisiana Tech.

"He was a devout family man and the conversation never stopped without us talking about our own kids, not just the players we coached," Blair said. "Life is precious. We must enjoy it and we must respect it because it can be taken away at any time."

Michael Jackson Deathbed Auction: Called Off

The literal deathbed where Michael Jackson passed away is no longer for sale.

Incredibly, the bed where Jackson died actually was for sale until recently.

Julien’s Auctions has removed the queen-sized headboard from its auction of items from 100 North Carolwood Drive in Los Angeles, Jackson’s last residence.

“This item is the only portion of the bed that had been listed for auction, and no part of the bed remains for sale,” company president Darren Julien said.

Michael Jackson Death Photo

The headboard seen in evidence photos during the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray (NOT the Michael Jackson autopsy photo seen above) was removed upon request.

Jackson’s estate was upset about the auction and asked that the bed be removed ASAP. It was listed after Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Julien said that the mattress where MJ took his last breath “was never included in the auction and, in fact, is the property of The Estate of Michael Jackson.”

Only the headboard had been offered for sale. And it no longer is.

Awaiting sentencing Nov. 29, Murray wants to kill himself in jail.

Afghans to debate future of U.S. presence, Taliban vow attacks (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? About 2,000 Afghan community and political leaders will gather on Wednesday in Kabul under tight security for four days of deliberations on the country's most pressing issues, including ties with main ally the United States.

The meeting, known as a loya jirga, or grand assembly, cannot make laws, and whatever it decides has to be approved by parliament, but the subjects up for debate are among the most sensitive: the scope of a U.S. military presence after a 2014 deadline for foreign combat troops to leave and the idea of peace talks with the Taliban.

The Taliban, who have long fought to oust foreign forces, have dismissed the meeting as a ruse to cement what they see as foreign interference and have already tried to disrupt it. They have vowed to target participants and said they had a copy of the jirga security plan.

On Monday, security forces shot dead a suicide bomber before he could set off his explosives near the site of the jirga.

"The loya jirga will discuss mainly two agendas: one will be regarding the strategic partnership deal with U.S. and another (will be) about the peace process," said Rangeen Dadfar Spanta, national security adviser to President Hamid Karzai.

Jirga means gathering in the Pashto language and the assemblies of mostly bearded, turbaned notables are a tradition among the Pashtun tribes of the south and east.

Grand gatherings, or loyal jirgas, have been called throughout Afghan history to discuss weighty affairs that affect the country's various ethnic groups and tribes.

Karzai, who is negotiating a strategic partnership with the United States, will have had his position strengthened by Tuesday's announcement that the International Monetary Fund has approved a $133.6 million loan program, marking a fresh start to ties strained since last year by a bank corruption scandal.

"The strategic plan is the big agenda. In the jirga they will discuss economic development ... foreign troops' existence in Afghanistan, security, night raids and many more issues which are part of the deal," said Safiullah Zeer, an organizer of the meeting.

Night raids are one of the most hated foreign military tactics in Afghanistan and a cause of friction between Western nations and Karzai, who has said he wants them stopped.

A September report by social research groups said the number of raids, and confusion caused by darkness means they often pose a disproportionate risk to civilians.

LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME

Roads leading to the hall in which deliberations will be held, near the Polytechnic University, about 10 km (six miles) from central Kabul, have been closed to normal traffic.

Dozens of extra Afghan security guards are patrolling the streets, performing body searches and in some cases removing turbans to check for explosives.

Hundreds of commuters have been forced to leave their cars at home and walk or cycle to work -- for some an inconvenience, for others a few days of respite from the overcrowded city's dust-churning traffic.

Last year, insurgents fired four rockets at a tent in which a "peace jirga" was being held. They all fell short, but the attack was followed by a raid by three insurgents wearing suicide-bomb vests.

Some in Kabul believe those attending this week are risking their safety needlessly, and expect little of substance to come from the meeting.

"Either you would want to have an agreement sorted out (with the United States) so they could discuss it and ratify it, or you would want a discussion that would give red lines or mandate the government in such a way that it would have a national consensus for negotiating," said Kate Clark of the Afghanistan Analysts Network.

"We are definitely not going to see a draft document. And as this is a jirga of selected delegates, we can't expect this to be a forum for thrashing out difficult issues."

The loya jirga is the latest meeting to discuss Afghanistan, after a low-impact regional gathering in Istanbul this month, and ahead of an international conference in Germany in December.

The format is not ideally suited to taking tough decisions.

"In the past, a lot of the time what the government wants is already decided before the jirga comes, so it's pretty much a rubber stamping institution," Clark said.

"In this case, I'm not even sure what the government wants out of the jirga so it's slightly different."

Study finds many patients shun free heart drugs

However, doctors were shocked that only about half of these patients filled their prescriptions even though they got them free. (AP Photo/Mel Evans, File)

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Give people free prescription drugs and many of them still won't bother to take their medicine.

Doctors were stunned to see that happen in a major study involving heart attack survivors. The patients were offered well-established drugs to prevent a recurrence of heart trouble, including cholesterol-lowering statins and medicines that slow the heart and help it pump more effectively.

"My God, we gave these people the medicines for free and only half took it," said one of the study's authors, Dr. Elliott Antman of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

In fact, the researchers couldn't even give the stuff away: They had trouble just signing up patients to take part in the study.

Nevertheless, Aetna, the insurance company that footed the bill, thinks this approach will save money in the long run and plans to start offering certain heart drugs free to some patients. In the study, patients offered medicines at no cost suffered fewer heart problems and saved $500 on average over roughly a year.

It is no secret many Americans don't follow their doctors' instructions. In one survey, one-third said they didn't fill a prescription or used less medicine than they should because of cost. The researchers in this study wanted to see what would happen if they took cost out of the equation.

The results were disheartening.

"Adherence in America is miserable," lamented Dr. Eric Peterson of Duke University, who had no role in the study. He noted that only 10 percent of the patients were taking all the medicines they should one year after a heart attack.

The study was led by Dr. Niteesh Choudhry of Brigham and Women's, who presented the findings Monday at an American Heart Association conference in Florida. They also were published online by The New England Journal of Medicine.

The study did not examine why people didn't take their medications. But doctors know that some forget. Most of these drugs mean three pills a day or more, for the rest of a patient's life. Also, some of these medicines carry side effects such as fatigue, lightheadedness, muscle pains, cough, even sexual difficulties for men.

Still, heart attack survivors like Joan Ferraro, 53, of Freehold, N.J., said they can't imagine not taking prescribed medicines, though she sometimes forgets her pills over a weekend.

"Why would you want to go through something like that again? It was the most horrific experience of my life. I would never want another one," she said.

The study enrolled 5,855 Aetna members who had a drug plan as part of their benefits and were going home from the hospital after a heart attack. They were 53 years old on average, and three-fourths were men.

The researchers had hoped to recruit 7,500 patients but scaled back when so few signed on.

Preventive medicines were offered free to 2,845 patients and prescribed with the usual copayments for the rest. Copays for these drugs run around $50 a month.

Roughly a year later, the share of patients who filled their prescriptions ranged from 36 percent to 49 percent in the no-copay group, depending on the drug, and was only 4 to 6 percentage points higher in the group that had no copays.

Providing these medicines for free had a "distressingly modest" effect on patients' willingness to take them, Dr. Lee Goldman of Columbia University and Dr. Arnold Epstein of the Harvard School of Public Health wrote in an editorial in the medical journal.

The Commonwealth Fund, a foundation devoted to improving the health care system, helped pay for the study, and some of authors consult for insurance companies.

In the study, the total number of heart attacks, strokes, cases of chest pain or heart failure and other such problems was significantly lower in the group offered free medicine.

That meant that an additional 2 of every 100 people were spared such problems because they were offered free medicines. Doctors suspect the difference between the groups would have been greater if more people had actually filled their prescriptions.

Costs dropped 26 percent for patients in the free drug group compared with the others, partly because of fewer doctor visits, lab tests and hospitalizations.

The costs for the insurer averaged $69,997 over a year for those with the usual coverage and $64,726 for those offered free medicines. That was not considered a significant difference statistically, but insurers looking at the bottom line would still view it as worthwhile.

Dr. Lonny Reisman, an author of the study and chief medical officer for Aetna, said the company plans to offer some of these drugs free or with a reduced copay to some heart attack survivors and is considering doing do so for other chronic conditions such as diabetes and chronic lung disease.

The study may persuade other insurers to do the same, Goldman and Epstein said.

Groupon plans bigger holiday push this year (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Groupon Inc is trying to grab a much larger share of consumers' holiday spending this year following the biggest daily deal company's initial public offering.

Groupon launched its first holiday shopping push last year. Grouponicus, as it is known, offered discount deals in 15 cities last year. This year, Grouponicus will target 41 cities in the United States and Canada, including New York, Los Angeles and Dallas.

In 2010, Groupon focused on smaller deals, but this year the company will offer bigger-ticket items.

Groupon plans to offer so-called "Epic Deals" starting Nov 15. These will be specific experiences, such as a round-the-world trip and a cooking class and group dinner with Chef Todd English.

Groupon also plans to offer a national deal with retailer American Apparel Inc, as well as discounts on products like electronics, home goods and fitness products.

"We learned a lot from last year," said Aaron Cooper, chief of gifting at Groupon.

Groupon's main business -- offering big discounts on local services and products and splitting the revenue with merchants -- was criticized as the company traveled a tortured road to being a public company earlier this year.

The company pulled the IPO off, raising at least $700 million in an offering that valued it at around $15 billion. If Groupon has a big holiday season, that could help support its shares in its crucial first few months as a public company.

In another change, Grouponicus holiday offers will show the value of the service on a voucher given as a gift, rather than the price paid.

"Going into the holiday season, Groupon may get used for gift giving which could boost the numbers," said Fred Moran, an analyst at The Benchmark Co.

Some other, more established e-commerce companies are also offering daily deals this holiday season.

eBay Inc plans 25 days of deals starting Nov 21. The company will offer discounted products on its website and will send one "deal blast" a day to customers via email.

U.N. committee says divided on Palestinian bid (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? A Palestinian bid to win full membership of the United Nations came one step closer to collapse on Friday when a Security Council committee failed to reach agreement on the issue.

The development left it up to Palestinians, who have so far been unable to secure the nine votes needed to pass a Security Council resolution favoring their U.N. bid, to decide whether or not to call a vote on their application.

That would be a symbolic move since the United States has vowed to veto the application. Washington would not need to use that power if the Palestinians failed to obtain nine supporters in a vote, depriving them of at least a moral victory.

The United Nations currently considers Palestine an observer "entity." President Mahmoud Abbas applied on September 23 for full U.N. membership for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

A report adopted on Friday by the Security Council's admissions committee, which includes all 15 council members, detailed the deadlock among council members.

It says the body was "unable to make a unanimous recommendation to the Security Council," without whose approval no membership bid can succeed.

Portuguese Ambassador Jose Filipe Moraes Cabral, council president for November, said the council will look at the report and discuss any future initiatives.

In practice, the next step depends on the Palestinians, who gave no immediate indication of what they would choose to do, saying they had to discuss the matter with other Arab leaders.

"We will be studying this report and the whole exercise thoroughly ... and we will make a determination very quickly as to the next step forward in the U.N. system," Palestinian U.N. representative Riyad Mansour told reporters.

Israel and the United States oppose the Palestinian bid for membership, saying the only way Palestine can get statehood is via peace talks with Israel. The Palestinians say they have created a viable state that deserves membership and that they have not turned their back on talks, which they say Israel has sabotaged by continuing to build West Bank settlements.

COUNCIL SPLIT

The membership issue has split the Security Council almost in half. Diplomats say Russia, China, Lebanon, Brazil, India, South Africa and probably Gabon and Nigeria would support the Palestinians, the United States would vote against and Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Colombia and Bosnia would likely abstain, with Germany possibly voting against.

Palestinian officials said they would not give up their quest for U.N. membership, but declined to spell out their strategy before an Arab League meeting next week.

They could request a prompt Security Council vote, even though that appears doomed to fail. Alternatively, they could make a fresh membership attempt in the Security Council in the New Year, when five seats will have changed.

Another much-discussed option would be to go the General Assembly and request an upgrade to an observer "non-member state" like the Vatican. That would fall short of full membership but would implicitly recognize Palestine as a state and would likely win a majority in the 193-nation assembly.

German Ambassador Peter Wittig urged the Palestinians to reconsider what to do. "I think the picture is clear that there is no majority here for admission," he said.

But Palestinian officials rejected suggestions that their membership drive had failed.

In New York, envoy Mansour said that following Palestinian admission last month to the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, "now it is a fact that we do exist in the U.N. system as a state." The UNESCO move was criticized by Israel and the United States, which suspended funding to the agency.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat told Reuters by telephone from Tunis: "I would beg to differ with anyone who says success or failure, because it is a beginning. We are going to study our options and take it from there."

Newlyweds among dead in Hawaii helicopter crash

Federal officials are investigating the fiery crash of a tourist helicopter that slammed into a mountain ridge on Hawaii's Molokai island on Thursday, killing the pilot and the four tourists aboard.

The aircraft was flying to see West Maui and Molokai when it went down near an elementary school, authorities said. Firefighters recovered four bodies and the fifth was located under the wreckage.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters owner David Chevalier said the passengers were two men and two women taking a 45-minute tour that departed from Kahului, on Maui. He declined to release the pilot's name.

"We're extremely grieved for our pilot as well as the passengers," Chevalier said. "Something like this can't be more devastating to us."

Rod Antone, a Maui official, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the passengers were from Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada.

Maui county officials said at least two of the passengers were newlyweds, the paper reported.

The Maui News said officials identified the pilot as Nathan Cline, 30, of Kihei.

The EC-130 chopper that crashed was less than a year old and was being leased from Nevada Helicopter Leasing LLC, Chevalier said.

Deadly crashes
Molokai is a mostly rural island of about 7,000 people between Maui and Oahu, where world leaders have gathered this week for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Honolulu.

Helicopter tour companies advertise trips to Molokai to see the island's sea cliffs and Hawaii's tallest waterfall. The remote Kalaupapa peninsula on Molokai is where Hawaii exiled leprosy patients between 1866 and 1969.

A Blue Hawaiian helicopter was involved in a July 2000 crash that killed seven people on Maui. A National Transportation Safety Board report said that the pilot was responsible, failing to maintain enough altitude over the terrain amid low-lying clouds.

Maui mayor Alan Arakawa knew the pilot on a personal level, according to a report on news website Hawaii News Now.

"He's taken us around when we had the tsunami problems," the mayor said. "We went around and we actually got to see all of the details, taking us real close. (He was) very experienced. We're just really sad that this has happened."

He added: "We truly want to express our sorrow to all of those whose families are involved," Arakawa told the website. Blue Hawaiian, this is only the second accident they've had in the history of the company, so generally a very, very safe company."

Blue Hawaiian conducts 160,000 tours each year on all of the Hawaiian islands, Chevalier said.

Hawaii has seen several other helicopter crashes in the last decade.

In March 2007, four people died when a Heli-USA Airways helicopter crashed at Princeville Airport on Kauai.

Three passengers drowned in 2005 after a helicopter crashed into the ocean off the coast of Kauai. In 2004, five people were killed when a helicopter crashed into a mountain on Kauai.

Helping Others Helps Teens Beat Substance Abuse (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Nov. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Helping others can reduce cravings for alcohol and drugs among teens undergoing substance abuse treatment, a new study suggests.

Such cravings are major causes of relapse after treatment, the Case Western Reserve University researchers noted.

The study included 93 male and 102 female juvenile offenders, aged 14 to 18, referred by courts for substance abuse treatment at a large facility in Ohio. Most of the teens were marijuana-dependent (92 percent) and many were alcohol-dependent (60 percent).

They were interviewed within the first 10 days of starting the 12-step treatment program and two months later when they were discharged from the program.

Helping others in the program improved four of seven substance abuse treatment outcomes. Two types of craving symptoms and narcissistic entitlement were reduced, while psychosocial functioning improved.

The study also found that teens who had spent more time in religious pursuits -- such as prayer, worship and meditation -- during their lifetime were more likely to help others during the treatment program.

The study appears in the November issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

"Our findings indicate that service participation in 12-step programs can reduce the craving symptoms experienced by adolescents in treatment for alcohol and or drug addiction," study leader Maria Pagano, an associate professor of psychiatry, said in a university news release.

"Similarly, we found that substance-dependent adolescents with greater religious backgrounds participate more during treatment in 12-step programs of recovery, which leads to better health outcomes," she added.

"Because most religions encourage altruistic behaviors, youths entering treatment with greater religious backgrounds may have an easier time engaging in service in 12-step programs of recovery," Pagano suggested. "In turn, youth entering treatment with low or no religious background may require greater 12-step facilitation or a different approach to derive equal benefit from treatment."

Shakira enshrined with Hollywood sidewalk star (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Grammy-winning Colombian singer Shakira now has a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

During a Tuesday ceremony surrounded by hundreds of screaming, flag-waving fans, Shakira unveiled her sidewalk star in front of the W Hollywood Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. It's the 2,454th star dedicated along Hollywood's avenue of dreams.

"This is incredible," said the singer and activist. "I would like to thank all of you."

Shakira said she remembered being on the boulevard as a tourist when she was 7-years-old, accompanied by her mother who told her, "Shaki, one day you'll have your own star here."

"If someone had heard that conversation, they would have thought she was insane," said Shakira, who was flanked by her parents at the ceremony.

The ceremony for the 34-year-old singer comes on the eve of her Las Vegas honor as the Latin Grammy person of the year.

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira was just 14 when she released her first album, "Magia."

Her popularity rose in Latin America and Spain with the 1995 release of "Pies Descalzos" and the 1998 release of her album "Donde Estan los Ladrones?" In 2001, she sold more than 13 million copies worldwide of her first English language album "Laundry Service," which contained the hit single "Whenever, Whereever."

She won her first Grammy when "MTV Unplugged" was selected as best Latin pop album. "Donde Estan los Ladrones?" won a Grammy as best Latin rock/alternative album.

Shakira has also raised millions of dollars to fight poverty and provide education for the poor through her Pies Descalzos Foundation.

Shakira dedicated her star to her fans, who "have listened, supported and understood my music all these years," and to Hispanics in the U.S. whom she praised as "a community that works and dreams, every day, to make this a better country."

A committee selects celebrities eligible for a Walk of Fame star and those who accept pay $30,000 in costs and fees.

The Cain campaign's 'blatant lie': Time to fire Mark Block? (The Week)

New York ? After the GOP candidate's chief of staff peddles a clear falsehood on Fox News, some Cain backers call for Block's resignation

Herman Cain might want to reconsider his "Let Mark Be Mark" rallying cry. Mark Block, the GOP presidential hopeful's chief of staff, said Tuesday night on?Hannity?that he had "confirmed" that the son of Karen Kraushaar, one of the women accusing Cain of sexual harassment, works for Politico, the publication that broke the scandal. The problem? Block "blatantly lied." The journalist Block was referring to, Josh Kraushaar, isn't related to Cain's accuser, and doesn't work for Politico (he used to, but left for National Journal in June 2010). Block already has a spotty track record. He notoriously smoked a cigarette in a campaign ad, falsely accused Rick Perry's campaign of leaking the sexual harassment story, and has a history of campaign finance irregularities. Should Cain ditch Block before he does any more damage?

Block needs to be fired immediately: This "epic facepalm" makes things pretty clear, says Allahpundit at Hot Air. "Mark Block has to go." Block claimed he had "confirmed" something that he obviously hadn't. His rationale is almost beside the point. If Cain doesn't ditch his "careless" chief of staff, "no one will take this campaign seriously again ? nor should they."
"Mark Block: Did you know that the son of Cain's accuser works for Politico?"

Especially because he's killing Cain's credibility: Cain swears that he knows how to "surround himself with good people" and "work on the right problem," says Jason Linkins at The Huffington Post. Judging by the actions of "serial screw-up artist" Mark Block, it may be time to "downgrade Cain's people-surrounding and problem-identification skills." Block has routinely pushed Cain to respond to pressure and stress with "paranoia, unprovable claims, and desperate vindictiveness." Voters want "calm judiciousness" in a president, and that's simply not a quality Block brings out in Cain.
"Herman Cain Chief of Staff Mark Block proving to be a serial screw-up artist"

But Block's lie may have worked: It's clearly "amateur hour" at the Cain campaign, says Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs. Block's inaccurate confirmation was "pure desperation." But sometimes, desperate measures work. Now that it's out there, it's possible that this claim, though ultimately false, will become "a wingnut article of faith" that's "impervious to facts" in the "right wing universe."
"Herman Cain's campaign manager's epic fail"

Firing Block won't help ? the damage is done: This snafu comes "in the midst of an existential crisis" for the Cain campaign, says Zeke Miller at Business Insider, and demonstrates once again the team's "inept crisis management and poor organization." Such false accusations weaken Cain's denials of the sexual harassment allegations against him. "If his campaign can't get even the simplest of facts straight, perhaps his recollection of events may be less than perfect," too.
"Herman Cain's campaign doesn't know how to use Google"
